98 pcm
Why can't SD tuning on 98 pcm, I have standard HP. Can't see histograms either, do I need a wideband or upgrade to 99 and up pcm?

98 LS1 PCM's do not have the supported software in the pcm to allow Speed Density and If using HP Tuners they do not offer SD enhancements for 1998 LS1's. The problem you are going to run into is you can not put a 99 and newer pcm in you 98 unless you modify your harness or convert the vehicle over to a 99 or newer harness. Best thing for you to do is Wideband the car and make the changes to the MAF table to get the correct A/F

You can run SD on a 98 PCM as easy as unplugging the MAF sensor and waiting for it to set the SES light or setting the MAF Fail Freq to 0 and setting the MAF codes to MIL on first error. There is even a 2 Bar SD enhanced Custom OS with HP Tuners. If you cant see histograms then you are doing something wrong using the scanner.

The problem with unpluging the maf on a 98 LS1 is runs off the secondary ve, which has limitations and not efficient. And you are correct they do have 2 bar sd, but they do not offer 1 bar which is the standard. what is the reason for wanting to go SD ultimabake

Yes mad mike, but only if you upgrade the 99 or 2000 pcm to 1 bar SD. OR you can just put a 01 or 02 pcm in it and dont worry about the 1 bar SD. 01 and 02 do not have the secondary VE table when you disable the MAF 99 and 2000 do that is why you upgrade to 1 bar sd mainly

I just got into the tuning stuff and a friend of mind, who has been tuning for sometime wanted to use the SD tuning to fine tune my rich conditions and use while driving and viewing the histogram. Neither of which he could do...

not shure why the histogram would not be reading, what is the software you are using HPtuners or EFI live? And you should not have to change over to SD to fine tune the motor, you need a wideband and make corrections to the MAF table. SD does make more power "in my opinion" but you can still have great if not better drivability with the MAF. There are pros and cons to running the MAF and pros and cons to SD

Pros to SD
1: more air / less resistence can pass through the lid and get to the TB
2: Dont have a MAF senser to fail or give false reading "throwing the tune off" which is a nother problem like 02 sensers.
3: can be more accurate and percise "sp"
cons to SD
1: does not adjust well with changes of weather or altitude
2: unable to adjust to dry nitrous systems with out command
and there are many more to the pros and cons of SD, these are just some, but if you ask me i love SD and open loop. but you need to know what you are doing when you do that.
