Default Performance Chips

Hey guys. I need a bit of help. Im not too informed in tech and stuff like that and I was wondering what it is exactly that a performance chip does. I have an 01 Z28 with edelbrock headers, magnaflow exhaust, and an SLP lid. My friends have told me that it'll save gas and boost HP. Does it actually work? What are pros and Cons?

I like jalapeno kettle-kooked potato chips.

Your friends' advice is more like soggy Pringles.

For the cost, those performance tuners don't do much. They are very restricted in their ability, as most must still maintain 50 state legal emissions. I'm sure it does edit somethings, maybe add a degree of timing or change some settings, but I doubt you'll see any 'seat of the pants' or mileage gains. Better off taking to a proper tuner with a dyno. More money = more results.

You will get razzed here when you talk about chips or chipping a late model GM vehicle. Replaceable chips or EPROMS were used on GM OBD1 vehicles 1995 and older with a few exceptions. You would remove a cover on the PCM and remove and replace the chip or EPROM with one that had different data in it. With 1996 and newer GM OBD2 vehicles, that chip is no longer in a socket so you don't replace it. You reprogram it without removing it from the PCM. There are products that let you reprogram the chip in the computer by accessing it through the vehicle wiing harness via the ALDL plug under the dash. There are hand held all in one devices and laptop based products that you can use to do this. There are some gimmick products around referred to as chips with outrageous claims of power increases and MPG gains that are nothing more than snake oil.

Yep. No biggie. It's just a joke. Don't waste time on hAndhelds just either a mail order dyno or street tune. It will help a lot
