Default HPtuners assistance needed in RI/MA (high HC emissions)

LS2/L92 heads, 222/230 .597" cam in a '94 RX-7
~'06 GTO ECM (I think...)

Car runs great for the most part, but failed RI emissions sniffer test by a ton: 15.75 gpm HC vs. 2.25 limit.
CO was close at 29.74 gpm vs. 23.74 limit.
NOx was low at 0.80 vs. 3.25 limit

So it's presumably running very rich...

The test is done on a dyno, consists of accelerating slowly up to 28mph in 10 seconds, holding for 10 seconds, decel back to zero in ~7.5 sec and then ~7.5 seconds idling.

Looking at the plot, the lion's share of excess HC is in the acceleration phase and then idling at the end.

I bought the car in October from a friend in TX. He has an HPTuners tune on it. I know next to nothing about tuning computer-controlled cars (but am willing to learn...).

I'm getting a Magnaflow 3" catalytic converter for it, but don't know if that will be enough. Also concerned about cat life given the very high HC reading.

Any pointers or directions to someone who could help out?

Thanks!
Dan

Get it tuned before putting the cat on or it will die pretty quick. That cam should run pretty clean if tuned properly.

Thanks, I would like to do that. The more I think about it, the more wack that HC reading seems.

Anybody have recommendations for a tuner in the Rhode Island/Southeastern MA area?

TIA!

Slowhawk in bridgewater is your best bet.

I was going to say the same thing. Don is great. He is also only about half an hour away from you. He's just off Rt. 24 in MA.

Thanks a lot, guys. I gave Don a call, will be setting up an appointment with him for after I get back from my trip.

I mentioned that it's running speed/density at the moment, and he indicated that that's probably a big part of the rich-idle problem. The PO had tried to set it up to run off the MAF (which is installed), but there were issues and we ran out of time before I had to hit the road (long drive back from Corpus Christi TX to Pawtucket RI!).

Don suggested going ahead with getting cats for it before the tune. How many miles do reckon would be safe for them running rich?

Thanks again, all!
