Default I want to slow it down

Strange request.

I have an LS3 (420hp version) and 6L80E in a vehicle that weighs less than 1.3ton with 4.11:1 diff ratio and I'm looking to find a way to wipe 100hp off the engine when my kids drive it.

At the moment it will spin the tires (Mickey Thompson 12x29x15) unless you're real soft on the throttle. Makes it hard to manouver in tight spots.

So my 20 year old can drive and not wreck it I'd like to be able to flick a switch and de-tune the engine.

The 20 year old won't drive it as he says it's dangerous.

Can this be done without upsetting the EPA guys?

Set rev limiter to 4000, take away timing and add in fuel everywhere. Increase torque management especially during shifts.

That will turn your car into a turd.

And it will never be just a flick away, you have to reflash a tune which takes like 40-50 seconds.

This to me is just like gun safety. Don't blame the gun (or the car in this case). If you want to allow your son to drive it, teach him to drive it responsibly and understand the consequences of not driving it responsibly. There's a gas pedal that moderates throttle between a range of 0-100%. It's not an on-off switch. 20% throttle is not going to light the tires and cause a loss of control.

If you don't feel he can be trusted to drive the car responsibly, then be the parent and tell him he's not ready. Don't play games with the tune....he'll just find a way to put things back when you're not looking.

Setup your IAT to a parallel resisistor engaged/disengaged with a relay. Size the resistor to park you at the furthest right or left side of the IAT timing table. Subtract like 15 deg timing from that part of the table.

Should convert the car from a raging race car to a gutless turd with the flip of a switch.

You didn't mention which PCM you're running, but there may be throttle limiters (if it's drive by wire) for each gear that you can work with in the torque management tab. That won't mess with emissions at all.

Thanks for all the encouraging responses.

It so happens the 20 year old is asking for the de-power, not me insisting on it.

I find the initial take up of drive to be like a switch. Either its on or off.

I drive other 500hp cars and have no problem with them.

The PCM is the 56 tooth unit.

I'm not looking to turn it into a "turd" and I do consider myself a responsible parent for acknowledging his request and acting on it.

After 3 years of driving this kid "who can't be trusted", to quote SSpdDmon, hasn't marked a car or been pulled up by the Police so I don't see him as the problem.

Please don't take my post the wrong way. I wasn't trying to insult you. Just merely stating...either you trust him or you don't. That's your decision - not mine. My point still stands. The car shouldn't be altered. He should either learn to handle it (in a safe environment if necessary) or pass.

Read my mind....IAT table would be the easiest to make it work with the switch....but it will require touching the tune to pull the timing necessary in the IAT vs spark retard table.

Just tell him you took 150hp out of it and dont do anything. Once hes used to it he'll be fine. Tell him to put his purse away

I found a local LSx specialist who can do it for me.

I'll be able to switch from low to hi power at the flick of a switch.

I know my wife will prefer it with the lower power.

She drives an SLK55 Benz and it sin't half as jumpy as the LS3.

I think there are times when I'd use it to, such as in heavy traffic.

I also have a 17 year old who deffinitlely shouldn't be let loose with the power weight ratio this car has.

I beleive Frost sells dual flash PCM's for Gen 3's, maybe someone makes them for Gen 4 PCM's?

Overkill.....A toggle switch and a resistor would do it.

this thread is filled with people who dont have kids, or are children themselves...lol

there is no way i'd feel comfortable sending my kid out in my car the way it sits either.

If you don't mind me asking, how is he going to achieve this? I would love to do the same for taking it to a valet but without having to sit there in the parking lot flashing a new low power tune.

I was JUST thinking of this. Something along the lines of the IAT resistor deal. Just do the opposite of whatever that resistor is. -Extreme high IAT's. But you pretty much answered it.

I remember hearing something about this a while back. And I think he was talking about making it for the 411 PCM (4th gens) as well. Its was basically a dual PCM set-up with 2 complete tunes, with the key in the off position you would flick the switch to the tune you wanna run & then start the car. So in theory you could have a nitrous tune for the track & street tune for normal driving without having to bust out the laptop & reflash it every time.

Yeah when I was putting the car together for the first time last year I thought about getting one. However it's not really much of a benefit with an N/A street car that goes to the track on the weekends. Very cool and convenient idea though for E85 or nitrous
