Why does my car sound like popcorn at 5100rpms?

Why does my car sound like popcorn at 5100rpms? I can punch it and alls well until I hit over 5k then it makes that detonation sounds but the funny thing is that my A/F is between 12.4 and 13.2 at WOT. I have FLP Headers on it so I thought that would help but it still makes the crappy sounds. Any help will be great. oh and I have ls1edit coming this week so maybe that will help.

Maybe your timing is too high. I doubt it if the programming is stock '01 stuff but, it's a possibility. Also what octane gas do you run?
If you can hear that popcorn noise I'd stop punching it until you can get the detonation figured out.

I run 93 octane and my car has 35k miles on it. I wish I could figure this out. I might change out the plugs and see if it helps

I have/had the same thing. Try running a top end cleaner through it as well. I have recently added a catch can inline with my PCV system and ran a bottle of seafoam. Mine seems to be gone now. You may have carbon buildup in the combustion chamber that is causing your problem...
