Default Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor

What exactly does the fuel tank pressure sensor do?
I'm sure it senses pressure, but what does it do after that.
Is it an input to the pcm?
Do I need it. Race car only.
Thanks

It tells the computer when it should vent the EVAP to relieve pressure. If it is a race car, probably not needed.

That's what I thought. I've removed the EVAP and the metal line back to the rear left tire. Thinking about putting a small filter on it there.
Thanks
