I don't know what gains the timing map alone gets you but it's one of the only things I changed on my truck's tune. I eliminated burst knock, eliminated torque management, firmed up the shifts, and loaded a ls1 timing table then backed it off until it was safe on 87 octane. I made no changes to fueling in the MAF or VE tables.
The truck feels very different on the street now. Throttle response is snappier, at least feels like it pulls harder, MPG went up, and went from not spinning a tire from a stop to boiling the passenger side 275/60r17 Hankook.
