Tuning do's and don'ts.

Tuning do's and don'ts. With all of the new (lower priced!) software coming on the market, there seems to be a lot more people getting into tuning. Myself included.
I'm pretty intimidated by the unadultered ability to destroy my motor and trans with a couple of poorly thought out clicks and key-strokes... but I'm also looking to get the most out of my (very mild) setup.
Are there any tuning "do's and don'ts" people would like to mention?
EXAMPLES: Don't rev higher than 6,100 with a stock valvetrain, Shoot for -X LTFT's and use the IFR table to modify - not the MAF. Etc. etc.

...and keep a text file of changes made to each bin.
I've already made a few changes where I wanted to switch back after a few days. The above file helped a lot, as I've already got about 8 bins to choose from.

I save each .bin along the way, date & revision
letter (for more than 1/day) as part of the
filename. Haven't been able to maintain the
discipline of leaving myself notes as to what
each one changed. But, at least I have been
able to "back out of trouble".
Another good rule of thumb is, "if you don't
know what it is, don't stick your finger in it".
Lots of things you -could- touch. Many or
most, somebody can tell you what it is and
what makes sense to do. Some, you'll be on
your own. Today's explorer is tomorrow's
hero... or tonight's headhunter stew.
