That timing table was set for optimal power and torque based on actual feedback on the dyno. It's common for timing to ramp up down low like that with aftermarket cams to address the depression in the torque curve which also corresponds to the cylinder pressure dip of the cam event timing, the timing then drops around peak torque where detonation is most likely to occur and then it ramps up again at peak horsepower. The timing curve was not set on accident nor was it a guess, it was based on actual feedback of the dyno for your particular combo. Adding or removing timing is going to result in less power and torque or detonation.

Now that being said I remember thinking you had bad cats, did you? If so that will change things from the last time it was on the dyno.

Yeah. I crowbarred them. Remember how hot the engine bay was? Cooled it way down

Good, glad that was it because I was running out of ideas. A restriction in the exhaust like that will limit how much timing you can run and make it have more of a tendency to detonate.

Yeah it made a tremendous difference in how hard it pulls. I've been trying to screw around with it to learn, but when I get the kooks exhaust on it, I'll be bringing it back.

What really started this thread was a power hesitation in the 1600-2600 rpm range. Hits 3k like nitrous

So I was trying to see if I could resolve it real quick on my own

Yeah now that the big restriction is gone it may like more timing down low. I remember it being pretty timing limited down there and would detonate pretty easily.

Good to know. I keep thinking back to the first attempt back in January when you almost couldn't tune the pinging out of the car and we figured out the cam was off. Hell we couldn't rev over 5500

I'm thinking they've been a problem the whole time but just never crossed my mind.

Well the biggie with that one was that the torque curve was way off as well and that can only be caused by cam timing events. This new one has a torque curve that makes sense.

By the way, nice write up on your website for the walbro install. Even though it's like ten years old...
