Default HPTuners Tuning.....

OK....I am almost to a point of needing to purchase a tuning platform for my build. NA LQ4...nothing exotic. I happened to be at my buddies house while he was tuning an single turbo EFI setup, using MOTEC. Awesome plateform. It allowed LIVE tuning of fuel and timing tables. Literally, change your values and watch EGT's and AFR change.

My question is........Is HPTuners or even EFI Live this way? Or do I have to make a change to the table...upload that change, fire the car..and see what it did? Thanks guys.

Yes and no. EFI live is if you go the roadrunner route. HPt is, for a few tables at a time, if you go the custom OS route.

If I am using the factory style OS can I modify fuel and ignition on the fly without reflashing? Literally make a change while idling, and watch it change my data....I guess that's my real question.

I am a novice at this...so I may not be down with lingo quite yet.

You can do real time tuning with hptuners... but I've heard people claiming that some OSs don't support this... so I think it depends on the year/make/model of your OS.
Mine is a 2002 lq4, and it works.

Sounds like the system you were watching is the best, but if you stick w/the LS software, you will want EFI Live and the RoadRunner.

The RoadRunner is attached by USB cable. You can make changes while the engine is running, not running, keyoff or key on. Also, the roadrunner uses the active datalog to make changes you program automatically or you can make direct changes yourself.

For example, you can use the wideband sensors to feedback through the datalog and adjust the VE table as you drive. Makes cam changes a breeze. Something I did with it that was pretty cool, were spark changes.
I had some knock in one of my old motors. I setup the log to monitor knock, then when found, I set the RoadRunner up to reduce 0.5 deg spark per knock until there was no knock.

Not sure what your price point is but efilive+roadrunner is going to set you back roughly $1600 vs about $600 for HP Tuners.
