Harness swapping

I am going to look at a roller car tomorrow and he removed the harness and computer with the engine and tranny.

My question is can I buy a harness off of eBay or wherever and plug it in, and will it work? Are harness' specific to cars? This may seem like a series of idiotic questions, but I just want to make sure that I can get a harness back into this car and make it run without any major issues.

98 has its own harness but 99-02 will plug into each other, there are minor differences like egr, air, etc but the harness will work.
