Default Help me chose a tuner.

I just picked up an LS Camaro. It's a heads, cam and exhaust type car with a Nitrous as well. Right now the car has a so/so tune in it that's set up for a good bit of nitrous. I believe the previous owner was using HP tuners for the car.

I am ready to buy a tuning device for the car. I'm leaning toward HP tuners but I HATE the fact that they have no phone number so I can ask preliminary questions or call them if I get into a jam and potentially cause a problem. I looked at EFI live and do not like the fact that it's in NZ. I tried calling Diablo about the Trinity but I fell asleep while the phone just rang and no one answered.

I have owned a Fast XFI system before and I have been using SCT with Mustang for years so I have an understanding of how those products work but not HP tuners.

I have a lot of questions about the HP tuners so if anyone here wants to help I can fire them off.

I am sure people will begin to chime in but I will start. I had the reservations and even got pissed once after I was tuning for a while over the no phone number issues. Racetronix is the same way I I don't agree with it. Anyhow, when I have had questions in the past Bill @ HP has always answered my emails in a timely manner. HP is by far my favorite software. I have EFI live as well.

HP Tuners has a forum you can ask questions on. A couple of the principal owners will sometimes answer questions about the product. They won't answer How To Tune questions. Other tuners there will sometimes answer specific questions but general How To Tune questions many times go unanswered. And just because someone answers a question there, just like here it may not be correct especially the How To Tune questions. I've been using HP Tuners since 2004 and have never had a need to call anyone there. They have a decent support system through email. support@hptuners.com

Give us a call if you have any questions about HPT, we are a dealer for HP Tuners, not only do we sell it but we also use it everyday.

I just sent an email into HP at the address you posted. I am going to post below the exact questions that I asked as I'm sure they're basic pre-purchase questions that i'm sure anyone with the HPT knows the answers to.

1. Does the HP Pro kit come with a Handheld that stays in the car and stores the tunes in it? I want to know if I could store multiple tunes like a street tune, an aggressive track tune and then maybe one for NOS

2. When I plug the HP tuners in will I have direct access to the current tune that's in the car? Will I be able to make changes to that tune and use that as my base and work with it?

3. I understand the HP PRO has the Datalogging capabilities with it and some extra channels to log AFR and such. Does the user actually have the ability to make changes to the AFR, Timing tables, and things like that? Can the timing only be done globally or is it an actual table to work with?

4. Last thing is with the SCT ive been using it was a basic handheld that you can change timing globally and then some other basic things and any real tuning you wanted to do needed to go to a tuner. I'm trying to establish if this is like SCT in that aspect or is this more user interface?

Those type of questions maybe should have gone to sales@hptuners.com. Download the demo version of their software. It comes with some sample files you can open and look at the hundreds of tables available to edit. Not every pcm type and operating system will have the same tables though. None of their cable types will store tune files. The basic difference between the Std and Pro is with the Pro there are 4 inputs to input 0-5V signals for the scanner and 2 outputs to control external devices and data logging with out the laptop in the car. And as long as whoever tuned the car didn't tunerlock the file you can read it.

1. No handheld. You'll need a laptop or similar device. HPTuners is mainly just a box that plugs into your OBD. You interface it with the laptop.

2. Yes, you have direct access. You can also store infinite versions of your current tune with changes for octane, etc and just reflash when needed.

3. Actual tables. No half-assed SCT or DSP type stuff. You get full access to every single table in the ECU. Its overwhelming your first time.

4. HPTuners is basically a full control interface. You can control pretty much every single parameter in the factory ECU. With the standard HPT not being much more than an SCT, I'm baffled by the idea that anyone would spend money on the SCT with it having very very limited access to the stock ECU.

hope this helps. my replies are in italics.

1. Does the HP Pro kit come with a Handheld that stays in the car and stores the tunes in it? I want to know if I could store multiple tunes like a street tune, an aggressive track tune and then maybe one for NOS

no, tunes are loaded from your laptop directly to the PCM via an ALDL cable.

2. When I plug the HP tuners in will I have direct access to the current tune that's in the car? Will I be able to make changes to that tune and use that as my base and work with it?

yes, you can read that tune and work on both with the editor and the scanner (using the real time tuning function)

3. I understand the HP PRO has the Datalogging capabilities with it and some extra channels to log AFR and such. Does the user actually have the ability to make changes to the AFR, Timing tables, and things like that? Can the timing only be done globally or is it an actual table to work with?

yup timing tables are editable with HPT as with most tuning software.

4. Last thing is with the SCT ive been using it was a basic handheld that you can change timing globally and then some other basic things and any real tuning you wanted to do needed to go to a tuner. I'm trying to establish if this is like SCT in that aspect or is this more user interface?

this is more in depth. you can change pretty much any of the parameters that GM put in, plus a couple more.

I have used HPTuners most vs efi live & tuner studio (micro/megasquirt) . They all vary a little bit but they essentially all do the same job.

All the software makers really do is maintain the software. It's up to you to know how the PCM controls engine function.

As the other replies to your post show, HPtuners has a huge supporting community of users that can generally answer any questions you have within reason. There is not only the HPT forum, but also this site and numerous other car forums full of users.

Guys thanks a lot. That get's all those preliminary questions answered. I also got a phone call over to LSX POWER Tuning and he spent a good bit of time with me. I just need to get it ordered up now and get this tune a little more in focus.

My wife's been driving the car and she smells like a Carburetor lol.
