Default 180 Hypertech on stock tune?

2001 LS1 TA. Can you run a 180' thermostat on a stock tune? I'm running 231 temps routinely in 85 ambient air temperature and looking to cool it down with a flush, trans cooler and SLP fan switch. Thoughts? Thanks!

No retune is necessary but you'll need to reprogram the fans for maximum benefit

Can I just get away with the fan switch then?

Yes you can. Any reason you went with the 180 over a 160? I'm just curious

I'm trying to avoid retuning. I think it has to be done with a 160 stat.

No it's no different with the 160 stat. I did mine last year and only had the fans reprogrammed via the tune

What about the car not warming sufficiently for emissions? I live in NY and the car is 100% stock.

The car warms up just fine, but a may take a few minutes longer. As far as emissions go I can't say if it changes that to any significant degree. If you have very strict testing in your area it may or may not make a difference. Here in MI where I'm at we don't have to worry about that

Temps are mainly fan dependent when you're not moving. Biggest difference with a 160 is cruising temps etc. shouldn't really affect emissions.

If the system isn't working as it should be, a 160 stat is not going to correct the issue. A colder stat only means it will open sooner, not control temps.

+1 your cooling system has problems, a TS will not fix them...

try to bleed air out (at steam crossover tube);
check for leaks (use pressure tester, detects internal leakage);
check radiator and A/C condenser for airflow blockages;
check airflow deflector for damage.

Thanks. I just checked it. There doesn't appear to be air in the system.

With the car idling in park she went up to 230. Its 68 degrees outside. Normally driving in this temp it would be around 190. I didn't hear the low speed fan but the high speed came on approximately 225 degrees. The rad isn't being obstructed and the car has good heat. I recently saw post stating the low-speed fans coming on in the low 200s in the high speed fan switching on around 226-230.

I will shortly be removing the factory ps and trans coolers and will install Derale aux coolers. I will also be cleaning the outside of the rad for good measure. I think now these numbers are due to he 187 factory stat and fan temps. They should drop with the installation of the aux coolers. Only the trans cooler will be in front of the radiator so that might help. I think the SLP fan switch could work too but I'm unsure if the low speed fan is operating.

Stock:
fan-low on=226 off=219
fan-high on=234 off=227

If fan-low is not coming on then that may be the problem... there are 3 relays which control the series/parallel configuration of the fans, see attached.

Changed the stat to a "high performance" 180 degree Motorad stat. Ran no higher than 205 w AC off. (AC on around 199). I also bypassed the stock PS cooler. I will probably either get a HPTuner or a Hypertech Hyperpac to adjust my fans. Next will be installing the PS cooler and trans cooler. Looking good so far.

Good deal. Yeah definitely adjust the fans to get the most out of it

Just changed the stat to a 180 hi perf. Bypassed the radiator hose PS cooler as well. Car runs 180@hwy speeds to 212 around town. It was definitely the thermostat. With the AC on it stays close to 180 city/hwy - now I'm just getting a Hypertech to do my fans.

Thanks for all the infoðŸ‘

FYI had up to 2.9 Knock retard with the Hypertech Hyperpac tune so I took it out and just used it for the fan adjustment and the gauges. I'll try the dyno and drag strip functions one day.
