Default Help on best approach to basic tuning

Hi would like some advice on the best approach for my 2002 T/A LS1 6-speed. Exhaust is opened up with healthy 3" pipes, high flow cats, etc and I have some mild cold air type mods that have both helped. My sense is I am limited because I need to work the tune a little. Also would like to do that sensor swap I've read about that provides a larger, unscreened MAF sensor body from like a LS truck of about the same vintage. Problem is, again need to do some tune. I have no experience burning or flashing a tune in and it looks like my first foray into this area could be expensive and not yield much if I don't do it smart. Anyone with some sound advice on the best approach to tuning - for example, just a Jet II chip (don't think i want to change the thermostat to a lower temp) or a handheld with maybe a good range of pre-sets? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What cold air mods do you have...?
( stay away from oiled air filter )

Stay with the original factory (screened) MAF;

you're basically stock so there's not much to tune to;

replace your front O2 sensors (they would be too old by now);
replace anything else that needs to be (spark plugs and wires, fuel filter);
( replace worn out suspension joints/bushings, this makes a big difference )

make sure your PCV is not causing oil to be sucked in;

Sounds like you want to go with a handheld (like Diablo), it lets you adjust WOT timing and fuel in a narrow range, and a few other things...

with the stock thermostat, you probably should lower the fan temps a bit, the factory sets them too high.
