6.0 Timing

Default 6.0 Timing

So I did a 6.0 ltr swap in my 03 Sierra 1500, I'm using all the junk from the 4.8 ie harness, sensors, etc and while I had it out put everything new as far as sensors , plugs, wires etc. Also had a local shop put in a 5.3 performance program in. Issue I'm having is it's a complete dog to about 3200 to 3500rpm then it comes on like a rat on crack. Makes it hard to tow with and it also feels like its slightly surging at lower rpm. On my scanner I noticed the timing at wot from standing start only runs to about 22° and backs off steadily the higher the rpm. I'm so late to this LS game its driving me nuts, truck has so much more potential....

in my experience the factory truck tunes have too much spark and not enough fuel. but 22* and then backing off sounds like knock retard, def not enough spark.

Well I would say that too normally but its showing 0 on the knock retard?

I dont personally have hp but the guy that dropped the tune in was using that .

If it is a 6.0 why did he put in a 5.3 performance program. If it is all stock 6.0 engine you should just use a stock 6.0 tune and make some small changes to timing and fuel. I drive a 2004 LQ4 6.0 sometimes at work and it pulls from any rpm. Also check for misfires. 22 degrees isn't bad for WOT the LS motors run a lower timing than a small block chevy.

Yeah in thinking I should use a different program and I'm now thinking it's also going lean on me at Wot , it's got the original pump in it so i ordered a walbro 255. Jumped on it this morning coming in from work and it fell on its face for a split second then took off but didn't have the box hooked up so couldn't see or map the fuel trim.

While there are "general" guidelines on timing, there is no 1 and done. EVERY combo is different, and every tuner, tunes differently. Without having a datalog, your just guessing at best. I have hours and hours of datalogs on my truck, and I still continue to tweak my tune.

Usually I see best power at around 28º on pump gas, naturally aspirated, with stock 15 degree valve angle cathedral port heads.

That makes perfect sense. A 5.3 tune in a 6.0 would run like **** before the transition to MAF only fueling which just happens to be at the rpm you said it starts running well. Before then, it would be trying to blend a completely jacked SD tune, because the cylinder volume would be off.

I had know idea that they would switch from map to maf in flight, that does make sense. Pretty soon I'll be able to data log and tweak it myself with alot of help from guys like y'all on here. Also I've been studying and studying this forum and some others everyday. I'll get this thing straightened out one way or another.

Many of us fail the MAF automatically in order to run SD only, but the factory tune blends them. Depending on the make, model, and PCM, this transition to MAF only falls at a variety of RPMs, but they mostlyl fall somewhere in the 3000 to 3500 rpm range. You will see a night and day difference with a factory 6.0 tune.
