Default VSS input requirements

Hi,
I'm trying to setup VSS on a conversion to enable the cruise control. To do this, I need to know how many teeth there are on the shaft that the VSS reads from so that I can make up a trigger wheel to mount on the prop.

The second question is, do the automatic and manual setups in the P59 PCM expect to see a different number of pulses, i.e. Are there a different number of teeth on the output shaft of a manual vs an automatic vs a transfer box mounted vss?

Yes.
40 on a 4L60E
17 on a T-56

If you are making a trigger wheel why not make it how you want it and adjust the calibration accordingly? Another option is running the VSS from the reluctor wheel on a drive hub from the ABS if your vehicle was previously equipped or had a option for it.

Hi, thanks for the quick answer!
I don't have efi live or HP tuners so can't adjust the calibration. I had wondered about using the abs sensor, but it's a 60 tooth setup on a 285/75/16 tyre so without being able to alter the calibration, I run up against the same problem. I also don't know if splicing into the sensor would upset or weaken the readings the ABS ECU sees.

The info that I've been sent from the people who removed vats and changed it to manual is below, can anyone interpret the speedometer settings?

If you’re not using the VSS to run a speedometer, it doesn’t matter how many teeth the trigger wheel has, they just need to exist in order for the cruise to work.

I'm not using it for a speedometer, but I would have thought there would be a minimum speed the cruise control would engage at? it's usually at 30ish mph on most cars. Is that not the case with the GM setup?

That’s a good point. But with a 60tooth tone ring that shouldn’t be much of a problem. You don’t need hp tuners either, just need someone who can flash the PCM. I had lt1swap flash mine to my 48tooth tone ring.
