Default need help with MAF 85mm or card style?

I have a built LS6 heads cam ect was planning on a 85mm 5 wire MAF its in a 69 Firebird and I'm trying to figure out a CAI and not look backyard rigged was thinking about possibly using a card style MAF? some may suggest SD tune but ecm has starter tune wired for 5 wire MAF, let me clarify would changing from 85mm MAF to Card type MAF) would this affect tuning? this is kind of new stuff for me- was going to attempt to make this type of CAI since these are $750! heck RotoFab makes them cheaper but I like this flush fender mount setup any suggestions much appreciated
second image the MAF is mounted to block off plate which looks nice and clean but I would need to extend the MAF harness
any suggestions where to get clamps and boots and 4" tube thats reasonably priced appreciated also

Nice write-up but so much over my head as I am not a Tuner I get the gist of adding the card but my setup isn't very exotic as it (hopefully) will put down 400-425 rwhp and trying to read/understand that just confuses me further

you asked about where to get the tube and parts. I linked you because there is info in there about who makes what.

still looking for answer:
would changing from 85mm MAF to Card type MAF would this affect tuning? or do sensors have different ranges?

The PCM is the limiting factor. Gen III PCM's generally only go up to 512 g/s, whereas Gen IV go to 4000... So... The type of MAF sensor really isn't the consideration there. That's more up to convenience and accuracy in my opinion. Scaling the tune is ALWAYS an option too, to get around the hard limits of the PCM. This works up to around 700 WHP or so, because at some point there is a limit here too, even scaled.

Spider knows much more about the scaling side on this than many on here do, and is the resident expert on this topic. The type of MAF IMO isn't the real issue. The PCM is.

Yes going from an 85mm MAF to a cartridge MAF will require an update to the tune. The registered frequency will show up as a different value that corresponds to a different airflow. As ChopperDoc said, you can scale as much as you want (like my sticky shows), then your only PCM limit is the max frequency of 12kHz. I've used this at 750whp and still didn't max the MAF out. All depends on the MAF size and style and scaling. I think with the right setup you could do 1000whp with a MAF.

1. It will affect your tune
2. Dont bother you are not making enough power to matter

!- OK I get it. I figured that it couldn't be that simple but it adds a cleaner look to the install
2 I know, I'm only looking around 400HP. The reason I was considering is adding the MAF to a similar air intake is more complicated and isn't a clean looking install IMO

I'd be more worried about performance than looks. It's UNDER the hood. Form should FOLLOW function.

Go before show...

And yeah, I guess I misunderstood his question. Tune is always required when switching MAF sensors, be it location, type, or brand... Yeah... Pretty important to calibrate it. 400 hp doesn't even need scaling, or shouldn't at least.

Even if you stick with the stock MAF, if you change the CAI that much you will probably need to get it retuned anyway because the MAF is going to get a different signal than it would if it was OEM.

well tune was supposedly installed by harness builder and they are no longer in business but it should have deleted VATS and emissions to get me going

ddnspider- I get it I guess I am wondering if it would run and how poorly or would be be tolerable until tuned

I'm not entirely convinced it would stay running at all unless your closed loop fuel trims kicked in big time.

I agree with you here... I also tend to focus on both. I put a lot of time and money into appearance too, but everything has to work. I guess that’s what separates many of us from the Honda crowd lol.

I was just saying it will need a tune, because the MAF is so important. In your case it may learn itself out enough to run, hard to say, but just expect to need a tune when playing with airflow and the primary sensor for fueling calculations. I would definitely not run the car hard at all until tuned for the change. That is extremely risky to the engine to get it anywhere near Power Enrichment (just think spirited driving) since that part of the tune will not “learn” at all, and could potentially cause a catastrophic failure. I would predict this setup to put you very much on the lean side since it’s vastly better than the stock airflow.

So really, you can run whichever MAF you believe looks better and fits your new design better, since either way it needs a tune due to the increased airflow and sensor location.
