Pulling timing during long uphill towing?

Default Pulling timing during long uphill towing?

From the Ecoboost LS conversation, someone mentioned but I wasn't sure if there was a way... would there be some way to just pull timing "on demand" like when you intend to put the engine under hard load for minutes at a time when you're extra concerned about detonation? Either at the same time as water-meth injection, in place of water-meth injection, etc. Assuming factory ECU's and such. (i'm totally new to all this so I don't know whats possible or not)

(if this belongs in Fueling and Injection instead, please move me or let me know)

That's not a good idea. Long term spark retard can cause lots of damage to lots of things - too much exhaust heat.

Interesting... in another thread I was suggested to pull timing to avoid detonation. I guess there's multiple sides to every engine change though.

It's called your main spark table. LoadxRPM

What I mean is, when you are towing something, you are going to be lower rpm and high load, adjust that part of the spark table.

You are going to be in a completely different area of the spark table at cruise, part throttle and WOT.

"pull timing to avoid detonation" is a very generic statement. Understanding the key contributors to detonation (fuel octane, intake air temp, coolant temp, oil in cc, etc) and addressing those first and then tuning computer to adjust timing as needed.

On its own, nothing about prolonged load should cause detonation. If it starts detonating after time at WOT, you may have another issue like too hot a plug or overheating. Those are not issues that get solved by pulling spark out. Long term spark retard will melt stuff, period. Derate of an SI engine must come from air via the throttle, turbo, etc.

What I meant was, can I pull timing on demand like by throwing a switch with a factory ECU? (even tho people are suggesting maybe not to do that) 90% of the time i'd be driving around without a load - heavy tow mode being 10% of the time or less when I have 6000lbs or more out back.

yes you can, but what everyone is telling you is that the computer can tell what the load is on your motor and theres existing tables that use that load to determine the spark lead. thats the whole point of all these dumb computers these days is they can do all this stuff for you without any switches.
get the truck tuned properly and you wont have to think about any of this while youre driving.
