Default Starting Issue

I previously posted in a different forum and thought I figured out the problem to be a loose relay connection but I was wrong. Ive got an LS1 in my 67 chevelle which has run great for years. Over the past few months It hasnt been starting occasionally. I just get one single click. Sometimes it sill fire after 4-5 tries and sometimes not at all. Ive been searching and trouble shooting with no success. Relays are good, grounds are good, new battery, and I just replaced the starter. None solved the problem. Any ideas? Would I get the single click (which Im guessing is the starter solenoid) if the ECU wasnt getting 12v? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try a diagnostic style remote start switch/pushbutton across the start circuit. If that works every time, it is either your neutral safety switch or your ignition switch.

I have 68 Camaro LS swap, so wiring should be pretty similar. The starter isn't controlled by the PCM, it's just the ingintion switch and starter. If it's not any ground or good positive connection issue, maybe check ignition switch. Would think that either works or it doesn't, but maybe a bad connection there.

Thanks for the replies - Im picking up.an ignition switch today. My understanding was that if the ecu isnt getting 12 volts, the car wont start. Is that not true? Any ideas as to the click sound Im hearing? Starter solenoid?

If thr PCM doesn't have power, it won't run, but the starter will still crank. The click is most likely the solenoid.

Thanks again. Picked up the ignition switch from NAPA and of course it was not the right one. Hoping to get the right one to try it out tomorrow.

My car started doing the same thing last year, I put a new starter on it and haven't had a problem since. I would think if the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch was the culprit, you wouldn't get any click at all. If you get a starter, buy a good one, not the crap Chinese ones the local parts stores sell, but thats just my opinion.

Well it's not the ignition switch. It's a t56 in a 67 so I don't think I have a neutral safety switch. Going to go back through everything again.

Bad fat battery cable - either ground or positive. They can look good and pass a low current multimeter test but not flow enough amps to spin a starter.
