Default SSR failing - tips to prevent?

Having issues with a SSR relay failing on my water/meth kit. It fails in the closed position which causes the pump to run constantly with key voltage. What is the best way to prevent this. I run a 100A 12v SSR. Pump pulls nowhere near that. Any tips on wiring this thing so the relay doesn't fail? This one lasted about 2 years. Its only ever "on" when the water/meth is for short bursts. Can't imagine why it would fail.

thanks!

That thing is good for 100A for about half a second. It has a single TIP120 style transistor inside it lol. Those Amazon reviews tell you all you need to know. The 1EGK9 is a far better option.

Its powering a small alky pump for less than 10 seconds at a time. Maybe 10a. Do you really think I need a $100+ SSR for that? Quite a jump from $14.

depends how often you want to replace them. the $14 is a bargain at half the price based on what is inside it shown in those reviews.

Do you have an external flyback diode installed? If not, that's likely why you're torching the SSR's.

It looks like a Crydom knockoff but all the guts are basically the same. He's blowing them because he's switching an inductive load and the flyback voltage is torching the FET inside and he has no protection diode....aka flyback diode.

I mean I love amazon for some stuff, but not things that can burn my house or car to the ground.

Speaking of SSR's has anyone had any issues with the MSD unit? They are tempting and hopefully don't have issues like these amazon units, I cant stand the look of those amazon units in a wiring job.

Their datasheet looks pretty legit. Nice that its got 4 channels integrated and includes all the short circuit/overload protection stuff built in (no flyback diodes needed). I did LOL at their current rating vs. time table. Like someone sat there with a stopwatch and said xx current is 12 minutes and yy current is 35 minutes lol. Overall looks legit.

Well it is solid

If I recall sloppy mentioned them in his not so sloppy build, but not sure I ever saw an update.

I went ahead and picked one up, going to run rad fans, woota pump, and trans cooler fan off of it see how it does. Should be pretty clean from Holley I/O harness straight to relay with minimal extra wiring.

How much you value a reliable meth injection system is up to you lol. I'd run a decent conventional relay at that price point before using that awful SSR. I initially thought it was flyback current like @ddnspider said til I saw the data sheet from the transistor that SSR uses....and yeah, its not suitable for a load like that. Maybe if you LN2 cooled the transistor lol. I have that MSD SSR as well, has worked for everything I've needed it for.

I'm impressed you found a datasheet at all LOL. I was simply going off the spec's in the listing.

Yeah I was calling bullshit on a single TIP-120 handling 100 amps at all. Turns out I was right. lol

the only thing i dont really like is the screw terminals. it would be nice is there was a way to use some sort of connector that looks a little nicer and is a little more serviceable.
i bought some wire ferrules to use for when i install it, hoping that cleans it up enough: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/...6-209/13549373
