MAF measuring in turbulent airflow?

Default MAF measuring in turbulent airflow?

What is the factory set measurement that the MAF is suppose to be reading for a 99 5.3 silverado? I'm not getting a response through my tuning forum to solve my issue. Right now my MAF is measuring using turbulent airflow, and I'm not sure how it got changed. I am having an oscillation issue between 2000-2400 rpm for my MAF readings and I believe it is causing my converter lock-up issues.

I saw your thread on HPTuners forum. The factory PCM and factory MAF are calibrated precisely given 100% stock airflow through the stock piping and air filter. Any changes to the piping, bends, location of the MAF, or the air filter can cause issues.

I don't recall any specifics about your car/truck. But I can tell you the MAF does not like to be within 4" of the throttle body (the throttle body can cause turbulence in airflow too close to the MAF) and the MAF really likes a straight shot of air going into it, and out, so about 4" in and out. This is why most MAFs are located in a straight section of piping.

I had a CAI on the truck when I started MAF tuning but switched back to the factory air box which you may have read. What is your opinion on re-installing the CAI and seeing if that helps the problem? I really don’t see how it could but I also know that I smoothed the TB entry and have ported heads which will cause a different signal for the incoming air, but I didn’t think that the factory airbox would be that restrictive. I am wondering now if the factory airbox is causing the issue?

What MAF and what diameter is the CAI?

The MAF is factory and the CAI tube is 4” with the filter in the stock location. The only reason I went back to a factory intake tube and airbox was to reduce the IAT.

The way I understand it now is, make sure the ducting from air filter box to TB is as smooth as possible.
Using my old 04 Tahoe as an example, trucks like it were found to make max power with an aftermarket replacement dry filter element in the OEM airbox and aftermarket duct,
More power than any open cone or cylinder filter. Plus it's smog legal in CA. Once there was a question about the duct (the exemption sticker came off and disappeared) but once he saw the OEM airbox he passed it.

I replaced the MAF and found that it was dumping way too much fuel past 4K. I had removed the old MAF screen which caused part of my issue. I have the tune straightened out now but need to get it to the track and get some data to finish up the tune.
