Default Dumb timing question

Why did you typically see gen1 carburetor SBC engines with 34-36 degrees timing and gen 3 computer controlled engines with 24-26?
what am I missing here?

A modern Gen 3 engine has automatic knock detection and reduction that takes place quickly by dialing back timing. This allows the engine to increase power while also accepting some risk of detonation.

this is not why the engines need less timing. It’s the head design as previously stated.
ls7 stuff uses even less timing, sometimes as low as 18, but usually 22ish

No, I'm not a hard-core engine tuner. Not by a long stretch. But these knock detection and timing reduction capabilities in our modern engines allow people to survive making stupid mistakes such as putting 87 octane fuel in a motor that is set for a far higher octane. These are the "risks" that I refer to above.

Many people here on LS1Tech also use the sight of a little knock reduction on HP Tuners as an aid to tuning.

Beat me up all you want. I'm fine with it.

Your answer was just completely unrelated to the question. Has absolutely nothing to do with the Knock Sensors why the LS Engines like less BASE Timing to make power.

Better Head flow = more port velocity. 15 degree Valve Angle compared to the SBC 23 degree Valve Angle which is faster air charge spread into the Cylinder. Hence why you need less timing.

LS7 is 12 degree Valve Angle and them Heads flow some good air too. Hence even less timing than other LS stuff.

Only thing the Knock Sensors help with is if you crank it up too high or get some **** gas, but any of us that tune these know what Timing numbers to use to get us in the relative area.
