Default Does anyone do a full rebuild on BCMs?

98 WS6 Vert

I'm getting intermittent power issues with my radio, windows and top. From my discussions, in FB FBody groups, the consensus is that the BCM is taking a ****. I watched the videos, on the typical fix, but since I have it out, I figured I'd have it fully rebuilt. Is this an option? Does anyone replace the Resistors, Capacitors, Transistors, Diodes, ect.?

Electrolytic capacitors are the only components that usually have a short service life when everything else is working. The other components last almost indefinitely as long as some other problem does not overload them. I would worry of doing more harm than good trying to replace everything when not needed. I may be wrong, but I am unaware of anyone who does what you are asking.

Got ya. Wasn't sure if it was an option or no. Thought I would look into while I have it out.

Do you know if there's anyone that offer a service, for a proper resolder, for the typical issues? I have nerve damage in my hands, and trying to do something like this, that is so micro, I don't want to take the chance and **** it up even more.

Maybe no help but locally there is a computer shop that repairs lap tops and desk top computers all the time. I've watched them solder tiny connections.

That's seems like a great, out of the box, idea. Thanks bro

Occasionally you find cellphone repair stores and audio amp repair people that are pretty handy with the soldering iron as well.

The problem will be finding spare parts for the board-level, surface mount components. These tiny resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors and voltage regulators are mostly unmarked as to their part number, design, manufacturers and electronic characteristics. They are often smaller than a grain of rice which leaves almost no space to print anything on them anyway. Also hope that your BCM printed circuit board components do not have any kind of conformal coating over the small piece parts. These coatings give the parts better survivability to shock, vibration and other harshness but the coating makes repairs more difficult. OTOH, if the BCM printed circuit board had a conformal coating, it might last longer.

I'd reach out to the very talented GM instrument cluster repair people on You Tube if I had a must fix bad BCM - "JeffEscortLX" on You Tube is VERY good at repairing modern instrument panel clusters at the board level. The "FixedUntilBroken" guy on You Tube is also very skilled with these kinds of repairs.

There's a company in Michigan that sells refurbished BCM's for many GM vehicles. They just need your money and the VIN # in order to program it prior to sending it out.

I do have that info, I was just on my way to a deer stand this morning and it's Minnesota not Michigan. It's Highway 71 Auto Parts and their phone number is (320) 403-4000.
