First LS Swap need help No start Situation
1979 Firebird
New American Auto Wire OEM Wiring harness front to rear
Holley Terminator X MPFI
05 Gen 3, 5.3 L33 NA
sloppy Mechanics Stage 2 cam
60lb fuel injectors
Corvette springs nothing else special
all new sensors fresh rebuilt engine
the problem:
Did the set up wizard uploaded
tried to start hard cranking and loud back firing through the Intake
checked coil harness to make sure not backwards
pulled cam and crank sensor checked connections all good
used volt meter and checked ignition-crank wire 12v when key turned and while cranking
i can hear fuel pump kick in and run 5 sec and cut off
it sounds and acts like the engine is 180 degrees out of timing..
but its my understanding that as long as cam gear dot is at 6 o-clock and crank is at 12 o-clock its imposable to be out of time.
is this true?
i am attaching a Data log to this
could someone please give me some advice
thanks
before it starts cranking the map is already reading -2.5, do you have the correct map sensor selected? also the manifold air temp is reading like 34 degrees but the coolant temp is 89 degrees. What brand cam and crank sensors did you use? There have been issues with aftermarket part store sensors, even the part store temp sensors usually dont read just right. Also go back over your grounds, and make sure the engine is grounded to the frame, frame to battery etc. and the main power and ground for the holley go straight to the battery.
You can put the cam dot straight up or dot to dot, its the same thing. I prefer to put it dot to dot because it gives a better reference than just point it up. you can check the timing with a timing light, youll need to set up a pointer and find tdc and mark the balancer. pretty simple to do
Thank you for reading my data log, i have a Bosch 0261-230-289 MAP installed.
guilty i bought Rock Auto Cam And Crank sensors..
should i buy OEM?
i was going to remove the coil ground leads and re scuff up the back of heads and i am running new ground straps from fire wall to engine and i will run a ground from battery to frame..
on the timing i set the CAM Dot at 6 oclock. And the crank at 12 “dot to dot”.
thanks for all the advise i will get on this first thing and let you know what happenes
Well a huge thank you to LSXford,
I i changed out rock auto Cam Sensor And the Rock Auto Crank Sensor with OE NAPA Sensors
blue and green lights so far so good.
Re-did TPS calibration and Wizard uploaded.
and before i attempted to start it i removed grounds from heads cleaned and reinstalled ran a large battery cable ground from back of passenger head to frame.
also ran a battery cable ground from frame to negative side of Battery
checked all connections sat in car turned key and bumped the starter nothing for a few seconds i assume it was flooded but then it HIT!
but then died =( then would start then die
so i feathered the fuel and it took off ran smooth at 2000 rpm i could rev it very very smooth but will not idle but hey its a start in the right direction....
anyone else have any advice on what to do next? i just want to get it to where i can gently get it to the dyno.....
i did not change the MAT or the MAP sensor..
i have attached a data log
thx again
If it wasn't for bad luck i would have no luck at all…
A little update, at engine idle i was monitoring sensors waiting on engine to warm up to temp and see if 2002 firebird fans would both kick on and off low speed and high.
well they did, just then i noticed on my holley hand held there was a yellow block.
it was oil pressure it was 6psi 22 psi off idle.
i researched and what i found and read, indicated that 6 psi was the minimum psi at temp..
i still didn't feel comfortable with it so i shut engine down was using 5w30….
let it set to go through a cool cycle maybe it was dog bone
started engine it was idling still at 6psi, and all at once AFR went from 14, to 09 and quit, did my new Bosch o2 sensor just crapout?
tried to start engine again it cranked over and locked up hydrolock or seized engine?
dropped plugs engine cycled blew fuel out of hole, yeay!! Hydrolock
so its a failed stuck open fuel injector, many thanks to TLF-Performance-parts
i have a post pump filter rated at 10 microns and new AN 6 PF lines that i flushed prior.
just my luck, maybe i can get struck by lightning twice before the day ends….
So i scampered over to Holley.com and had to “Bend the knee” and ordered Holley 76lbs injectors hope i have better luck with them…
while waiting on injectors, i then drained and dropped pan nothing that i could see some normal fresh rebuild junk and grit in pan and pick up had some material in screen my pick up has 2 screws holding in the tube and O-ring,
it was a red brown o-ring i went and bought a new one, black Fel pro, it fit a little better and was a little bigger so installed all that…
from under car i could not see any cam bearings that have walked out. Put everything back installed a mechanical oil gauge.
when injectors get here going to crank it back up see what happens. Dumped previous oil that had gas in it 5w30 replaced with Rotela 15/40…
Well Holly 76lb injectors arrived
installed injectors, installed mechanical oil pressure gauge.
at 205 degrees terminator x is reading 13 ps at idle much better than 6 i can live with that i guess,
however mechanical gauge is reading like 22 psi at filter hot cold off idle seams like oil pressure is 10 pounds less up top..
ran great hot let it set for 3 hours tried to start cold jumped jerked and back fired will not idle with out feathering the gas peddle..
Here is a data log i took.
cold engine will hit and die, i have to give it fuel and hold it there 30 seconds and slowly back off to Zero throttle for it to idle.
could it be the O2 sensor not heating up?

Ugh. What part of post the tune are you having trouble with?? You need to be able to compare them
WOW! never mind.
I'm sorry for insulting the intelligence of anyone on here that was born with all the tuning LS Knowledge they currently possess.. (91)
i used the Base/Canned tune through the Terminator X using the "Wizard.
that is my understanding a "tune" yes or no?
I just attached a Data log of my engine trying to run on that canned tune.
(91) are you saying you can not compare the Terminator X Base/canned tune to the data log i sent?
