Default how much can you detune an engine??

kind of an odd question maybe, but say I had a 10.2X car and I wanted to run 10.80 in a heads up series. could this be done safely and easily?? just take timing out?? how much can you take out and be ok??

no changes to the transmission, or shift points.

You could copy your low octane over your high octane. It should be good for pulling 20-30 horsepower from the engine. And it will noticably make you slower throughout the rpm range. I won't argue, because that gives me a better chance if I catch you at a stoplight!

i would say you could take out as much as you want, as long as you dont see any problems or too rich condition now from not burning up the fuel it was programmed for with the added timing,

How 'bout lowering your shift points to below your peak HP. That combined with some timing (HP reduction) should knock off 5 tenths consistently.

BTW, what happened to your 383?

get 3 200lb friends and let them sit in the car when you run it.

I want to do it so I can run in an indexed heads up class and not be bumped to the 10.00 class, stay in the slightly slower one. 'tune' it to run 10.7X's every pass when it's a mid 10 sec car normally.

the key here is CONSISTANCY. I don't think I could consistantly not push the gas alll the way to the floor. shift points is an options along with timing being the main thing, I think. I was just looking for ideas

I have a thread in the internal engine section, but quite a few of my comp 977 springs broke!!! not in half, just the ends 'chipped' off

I would go the route of shift points first as that is not changing anything in the motor that could cause it to run lean/rich, detonate, whatever. By just doing that you should be able to adjust your times down without any problems.

you could always use a throttle stop. not touch the tune at all so it should be as consistant as it ever was, and you wont have to worry about detuning to the point of harm. you make a pass like usual, floor it, but it doesnt go full throttle. go to the track for a night and adjust it till the car runs what you want it to.

Thats a cool idea too. You could do what I was thinking about doing. Depending on how far you want to limit it, you could drill and tap for a large set screw where the thottle opens up to. Cheap and effective.

I just had another grand idea (amazing what you can think of on the toilet). I think the throttle blade from the 98+ S-10 is 75mm also. Check out this picture and you will see that they have a restrictor plate riveted onto the throttle blade that cuts off 1/3 of the airflow. It would be an easy swap, and definitely hold you back!

dude if you have cruise control you can adjust how far the throttle body opens.

i couldn't get past 4.4V with out adjusting slack, try it, maybe it adjusts enough that nobody in the class will notice lol
