USB to Serial Adaptor - LS1 Edit
Hey guys, I am about to purchase a new laptop PC. It does not have a serial port. Which USB to serial adaptor are you all using with LS1 Edit that works?

ewww... I'd stay away from LS1 Edit and USB to Serial if you can help it... IE find a cheapie laptop ... I'm just really leary about USB to Serial after I lost communication during a write and had to have a dealership reflash it... (HumpinSS killed 2 or 3 PCMs to the point where not even the dealership could reflash... dnno if he was using a USB to Serial though)
Your best bet would be to buy a PCMCIA serial card (they can get pricey though but alot better than a USB to serial)

I have yet to find anyone that has an issue with keyspan usb to serial adapter. Run them in compatible transfer mode and they are as fast and reliable as a serial port. I run a four port usb to serial adapter and log two different devices at the same time. No issues with ls1-edit, autotap or efilive, and some other programs. You buy a cheap belkin or even the autotap made ones good luck.

Should apply since the programs are just accessing the serial port. The keyspan have more consistant drivers than some of the others.

I've got a Radio Shack one and the only problem is that the COM port switches once and a while. You just have to make sure you know what it is because Edit isnt smart enough to automatically find it. Autotap does without a problem.

If you do decide to buy a RS-232 Serial PCMCIA Card adapter (lack of a serial port), get it at Quatch (about a $120). Because of different technology, the read/write speed compared to serial is substantial.
Quatech sells the exact model # and brand as what is recommended by some but a from a different reseller and about $50 less. And they have excellent service. Got mine in about 3 days with email tracking.

Carputing does not recommend USB to Serial adapters. Only PCMCIA to Serial adapters.
FWIW, I could not get my Belkin unit to work with LS1Edit either. Works fine with LT1Edit & TTS Datamaster tho. But my laptop has a serial port on it - I was just playin' around.
Carputing is working on a new USB cable. It'll be a couple months before it's ready though. It's a total redesign.
