It appears there is not real consensus on what works first time out.

It appears to be very laptop specific.

Has anyone documented what they may have done to their laptop to configure a pcmcia card that did not work the first time or is the path to fixing to try different converters?

The sewell adapter is what I use as well
http://sewelldev.com/usbtoserial.asp

but I've only tried w/HP Tuners..... I sold my ls1 edit cable for a whopping 50 bux about 8 months ago.. but never dared test it w/a USB adapter... I lost one PCM due to a bad USB adapter (Belkin) so didn't want to try again

FWIW I believe HP Tuners is still offering a rebate towards their product for LS1 Edit users (email sales at hptuners dot com for info)

I have a Gateway laptop and the Belkin adapter is scary when Im using HP Tuners.

I was trying to tweak some things on a friends car and it kept crashing while I was reading his vcm. I was reluctant to try and write to the vcm but did it anyway and it went through. It crashed about 5 times before I finally got it to read my vcm in my car. I have made changes to my tune but I dont think Im gonna take a chance on writing it to my vcm in fear that it will crash during the write process and I will loose my vcm.

Incase anyone else has had this happen and can tell me for sure if this is what my problem is, I get a blue screen with some text about a fatal error or something and saying its gonna shut down. It shuts down so quick I cant read the entire page.

^^^ The problem is the belkin adapter... that's the biggest POS (next radioshack adapters) out there... poorly designed hardware and poorly written drivers

Fortuanetly HPT can recover from it... ls1 edit (at least when I used it) couldn't... resulted in an unuseable PCM

So what adapter do I need that is not too expensive? Im trying to find a cheap laptop that is older just for the serial port now.

I have an older laptop but it has no cd drive and the software is bigger than I can fit on a floppy. Is there any other way of getting the software on the computer without a cd drive? It doesnt have a usb either so a flash drive is out of the question too.

Not that it isnt recommended, they told me it flat out wont work and the PCMCIA card is the only way to get it to work.

behold the power of networking. you need a nic card, and, at a minimum, a cross over cable. you can share the CD drive on another computer and install the software across the network.

i bought 2 different USB to serial cables, one being Keyspan and both didnt work with LS1edit.

Im wondering if maybe i didnt something wrong when i loaded LS1 edit onto my new laptop. Is there anything i should check for?

when i try to connect to the car, it says, failed to connect. A-tap works fine though.

I drove all of the place today to find a pcmcia to serial and nobody had them, not even Frys, the biggest computer store. So im kind of scared to order online and then have that not work. any suggestions?

thanks!!

Carputing said that LS1EDIT will not work with ANY USB cable. PCMCIA is the only way to use it without a serial port built in. COMP USA online for $70 bucks. The dont carry it in stores.
