I bleive this was a rip off but it was the only software available at the time.
What is HP software, how much does it cost and can it be used on multiple ECUs?
Ouch.

You are correct.

www.hptuners.com It costs like $500, and it has it's own scanning software so you don't need A-Tap. You can use it only multiple vehicles of the same year model. It is year/model locked, not VIN locked. That should make it easier to get rid of than a Hypertech Power-Poopmaker.

Edit was wonderful in its day. Unfortunately it is outdated, ugly, unfriendly, overpriced, and it does not have a built in scanner. HP Tuners appears to be more attentive to people's needs, and they have a very nice product. Sometimes my wife probably hates them though, because I will spend hours in front of sensor logs, VE tables, and timing tables. But oh well.
