Default Kinda wierd O2 question??

Ok all I read something yesterday that got me wonderin'....

Got my latest issue of Car Craft and was reading about the build up of their 5.3L.. anyways... when LPE put the motor on the LS1 Edit software they found that the truck was running rich almost 12.2 ok now here is what they did.. they went to a factory stock truck and ran the scanner at the dealer lot... still came up with 12.2.

If the trucks run naturally rich... then is the reason I burn up O2 with my headers and more airflow that I am getting my rig to that magic 14.6 number?? With less fuel and higher flowing cats would that burn up my O2's?? Without any tuning is it possible to add more air to the mix somehow to get proper A/F??

Just was wondering.. did searches and never heard that the trucks ran rich from the factory..

More likely that the headers make the exhaust gasses
cooler, the O2s require a lot of heat to work (500C+)
and when they get lazy the PCM overreacts with more
fuel and hastens fouling them out. The more fouled they
are, the more heat they need or the lazier they get and
welcome to the death spiral.

The problem is more at idle and light cruise than at WOT;
WOT makes plenty of heat (but there the O2s are just
along for the ride).

Are the 'vette rear O2s connector-compatible with trucks?
I don't know, might be worth a check.

Now, neither LS1-Edit nor the dealership tools using in-car
O2 sensors can tell you that the mixture is actually 12.2:1.
They can see the -commanded- AFR, and they can see the
inaccurate-at-enriched narrowband O2 voltages, but only
a wideband O2 meter can tell the true mixture.

My stock PE settings translate to a 11.8:1 commanded AFR.
But I'm feeling much better now.

Jimmy.. the LPE guys were using an Innovative WB to check AF along with Edit and HP tuners. So I believe if they said 12.2 then it probably was. Just going by what the article said.

Just anyoing blowing O2's twice a month... gets expensive after a while and I figured this might be a good place to start. Getting the factory seting to 14.6 where the narrow bands actually read instead of a 12.2 where the sensors go whacky.

12.2 at idle means closed loop is just not working (like
dead O2s). This is not due to the factory tune, they
never would have gotten past the EPA being that rich
in normal driving.

You sure don't want 14.6 as your WOT AFR either,
more like 12.8:1.
