Default On a 99 SS, does the PCM read oil pressure?

Need to know! I want to replace my stock sending unit with an autometer one. I don't care that I will lose functionality of the stock gauge, I have all autometer stuff anyways. Someone told me that the oil pressure is read by the PCM, and if it senses an oil pressure drop that it will cause the engine to go into some kind of "limp" mode? If this is true I will leave the sender alone and look into tapping it for signal to run my oil pressure gauge, otherwise I want to remove it. Thanks!

The 98 is a 3 wire, and one wire does go directly to the gauge. The 99+ sensors are a 2 wire type to the pcm, and the pcm forwards a signal to the gauge.

Not on fbodys...I have a 99 and mine goes straight to the gauge. Honestly except maybe 98 fbodys I didnt think any of the fbody's went to the pcm.

So basically what I get from this thread is that it is ok to remove my stock sender and replace it with the autometer sender so I can run my autometer gauge off of it? Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated!

hmmm.... I thought all the gauges on the 99+ were driven by a data line coming from the pcm. Maybe the oil pressure is an exception.

You can unplug your stock sender and see if the pcm complains or not. Before you do the swap.

Good call!! Unfortunately I think I have to remove the intake to do this, I dont want to pull the intake just to unplug the sensor then put it back on, start it and then remove it again to either swap sensors or plug the old one back in.

OOPS!! It was getting late, and I had just posted in another thread about the water temp sender... And that's what I was thinking at the time, when I posted an answer in this thread.

The oil pressure is the same across the years, not different for 98, and it's only a 2 wire.

Also just for the heck of it, I logged the oil pressure using hptuners this morning just to see if it did anything. It reported "-15" psi continously, so the pcm doesn't seem to be aware of oil pressure after all.

I think you can reach back there and just unsnap the connector, without having to take off the intake.

The PCM doesn't know or care about oil pressure. I have the stock location blocked off, the wire just hanging there, and an Autometer sender down in the port by the oil filter.

Mike- You're going to have to find some angled fittings to get the Autometer sender in the stock hole.

Mike,
I was just thinking some more about it... Why not just put the Autometer sender down below and leave the stock one alone (and functioning)? All you have to do is remove the small block next to the oil filter, drill it through, then tap the hole. I even have the tap if you want to use it.

Hey Matt, the only problem with doing that is the sender is freaking HUGE!!! I thought of a few ways to do it but I'm not completely sure that the sender will clear my longtubes. Do you have an NPT tap or a tap that fits one of the adapters? Thanks for the help!
