All-encompassing tuner???
Unless you get a custom tune done, which can be a bit of an
ordeal from what I've observed. Don't have any knowledge about
the Vinci handheld but you've got the man here, for that.
If you want to work on the vehicle yourself you want to own
the tool and the capability to program, not just the "bucket"
for somebody else's tuning work. But if you want it done for
you, a handheld is a more cost effective (depending on the
arrangement you have with your provider of tunes) way. In
the middle, you would have to weigh the pros, cons, expense
and your likely path.
With handhelds you will always be in that dependent mode,
while with the PC based software & cable you have more
personal capability, and responsibility for the work (and a
hundred or two fewer bucks in pocket).
The other thing that the handhelds don't really offer (that
I've seen, anyway, mrr23 can correct me) is the ability to
log vehicle operation, which I consider essential to "closing
the tuning loop", getting the data to interpret the vehicle
(mis)behavior and what it might be asking for. Real time
display is somewhat useful but a menace while driving, and
ephemeral. Predator only gives you a very limited set of
params to see and to touch, totally missing things that pertain
to more substantial mods (like VE table for heads/cam, and
so on). The Crane/Vinci at least appears to have a set of
some "common mods" tunes that have a chance of matching
your situation. But the more "individualized" your setup, the
more likely you want either full-on custom tune support (which
you would do well to understand and negotiate prior to purchase,
vendor is everything here) or you be the tuner, yourself, and
that means the PC based tools. Or you could hire it done but
a couple of times down that road, and you're past the cost of
ownership. Though knowledge, especially if it comes from
mistakes, has its own price.
