Same here, my Edit worked on XP for a couple weeks, stopped working, and never worked again. I tried and tried to make it work again, but to no avail. Then I decided to buy a used laptop and install Win2000Pro. It's been working great ever since. I even took my laptop to a computer shop to see if he could tell me why Edit stopped working with XP. He said that XP is a "smart" operating system and it rejects programs that are not approved by Microsoft. That's what he said, and I'm just the messenger. Here's the kicker though, so many people say they have no problems using Edit with XP. That wasn't my experience, and it doesn't seem like it yours either. I know you could get it working with a 300-500mhz laptop with a serial port running Win2kPro (preferable) or even Win98. That would solve all your problems, but you have to decide if it's worth the trouble--it was for me.
Good luck man!!!

It'd definitely be worth it to me, I have Win98, SE, ME, 2k pro, XP home and Pro, and Server 2003, lol. I'll install 2k and see if I can get it work, maybe even run a multi boot, xp, 98se and 2kpro, see if I can't get it to work right. Thanks for the advice! You don't think there is physical damage to the PCM do you? Looks like it's software-related?

Yup, same error.
I think it's operating system related, plus your scanning programs are working. Win2kPro is the best OS to use with Edit, no need for multiple boots. If you have just a basic 300-500mhz laptop, with a serial port, that you can DEDICATE to just tuning and other car stuff (scanner, Excel, LM-1 software, etc.) that would be ideal. You'll never have to mess with Edit again, it will be completely stable.

I found a 2k pro cd I had from Geek Squad and installed. Attempted to connect, same exact fricken thing. i get the same error if I have the USB-232 adapter in my sisters Celeron XP laptop not connected to anything. I get the same error on the old laptop with 2k pro on it when it's plugged in, and nothing seems to make a difference. Now I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with the little ls1-edit box between the cables or something, because obviously it isn't even trying to work. What do you guys think?

I'm really surprised to hear that. Are you using a laptop with a regular serial port? Do you have an Infrared port, if so you have to disable it in Device Manager. Are the lights on your box lighting up? If you have Win2k installed, a real serial port, and no infrared port enabled, you're all set with the laptop/operating system. Maybe your copy of Edit is corrupted. Can you just install Edit up to version 1.21? If so, try that.
If still no go, why don't you email Ken Kelly at Carputing. He can help you troubleshoot your cable.

Yeah, lights on the box are lighting up and flashing. Checked all fuses, even pulled the PCM fuse for 2 hours, then tried again, still nothing. Originally to pull the flash, I used a laptop with a usb adapter and it worked. With that same laptop, nothing, with an old laptop with disabled IR and true RS232, nothing, can't even read the info off the PCM. I'm going to attempt to install LS1-edit from oldest version to the newest, see if maybe I can't get it to work that way. Looks to me like there's an issue with the beginning of the flash in the PCM that is keeping the laptop from reading it.

You might have to have the pcm looked at. I went through that too. When my knock sensors shorted, it burnt some pins on the pcm.
It seems using a laptop with a serial port, Win2k, plus your cable lights are flashing, cigarette fuse okay, no infrared port enabled, everything seems good there. What's left? The Edit software itself? The pcm?
If you still can't get it to work after trying a lower version of Edit, you could always send your pcm to someone like Wester's Garage. He uses Edit and sells reasonably priced used pcms if you needed one (he takes your old core one). Before that though, you need to be 100% sure that the Edit software is not corrupted. Did you save a clean copy to a floppy disc? Just load the most basic version, with no updates, and see if you can connect.
I feel for you man, but there will be a solution.

Try using 1.05. I think the programmers are the same but the software was later updated to work with XP, and then XP with Service Pack 2.
If this doesn't work, you might have to have your pcm tested (assuming the cable is good).
Hang in there dude!!

I'll tell ya dude, something doesn't seem right here. Sounds like pcm is okay if you're driving the car and scanners work. I'm sure you've checked Device Manager to see if you have selected the right comm port? And that comm port works okay with your scanner I assume? Carputing didn't charge me anything to just check the cable, plus they might have an idea what the problem is. If you sent them the cable and pcm at the same time they could check both. Ever try unconnecting the cable connections and reconnecting them? Did you ever have a knock sensor problem?
Just curious, what brand of laptop are you using, and what are the specs (memory, processor speed, hard disk size, etc.)?

I know, it really seems funny. I've verified that it is indeed Communication port 1, and the same comm port works great with the scanner. I am about to return and email to Carputing, see if they can't help me. I never had a KS problem that I know of anyway, on the scanner I get some KR. The one that has the true RS232 port on it is a Toshiba 2535CDS P1-300-96MB ram, 4 gig HD, win2kpro. That old laptop still holds a charge great, it'll run for about an hour and a half on battery, which is amazing since it is so old.

Your laptop sounds ideal, plus an hour-and-a-half battery life is better than mine. I have a Thinkpad with 96MB mem, 300 and something processor speed, and 4GB hard drive.
I'm glad you decided to contact Carputing, at least it would be worthwhile to know if your cable is okay, and if it is completely eliminate it from the equation.
I meant knock sensors codes where you actually had to replace the knock sensors.
Did you try just installing version 1.05?
You're gonna have to stay patient on this one, but it will get solved.
Anyway, man, keep me posted.
