Default Coil pulses cause incorrect rpm reading?

Im swapping a gen 1 sbc into my 94 ex-v6 car. I connected the white tach wire to the negative side of the coil, but i was told that since my car used to be a v6 as compared to a v8 that the tach would read high since the gauges are used to receiving 6 pulses per revolution and now it will be receiving 8. Is this true? By swapping the gauges with 150mpn z28 gauges would this solve the problem?
