Personally I set them a lot closer in to the thermostat
pivot temperature because I want to minimize the ECT
swing. However this basically requires that the low
speed fans run when the engine is warmed up and the
high speeds kick in as soon as the 'stat shows signs
of losing control. I've been running with FAN1 177/176
and FAN2 179/178.
It's not for everyone but I prefer not to have to give
up timing or push fuel to accommodate an unnecessarily
wide (and unpredictable) temp swing.
The more sensible thing would be to hardwire a scheme
where the radiator tank temp sets the fan speed, thus
giving the thermostat some real reserve authority. But
this is more work and settings are free (once you've
dollared down for the tool at least).
