every body here is talking about what is best afr. but nobody ever said anything about timing. the richer you get your car at then the more timing you can put in your car which also helps in hp. i have my car set up to 12.8 afr with 26 timing and it knocks 3 to 4 points but when i set my afr to 12.2 with 26 timing it does not knock at all. the only thing is i would have to dyno these numbers. i have read that best timing for an ls1 is 26-28 and afr at 12.8-13.2

Ive done cars that don't make any more power on 30* than they do on 25 or 26*. I usually setup for roughly 12.5-12.7 at peak torque and lean back out to 12.9 or 13.0 before peak power. Generally a lil richer mixture and a few degrees less timing at peak torque because the engine is most efficient there and lean back out with a bit more timing up top. I generally never go over 28 or 29*, theres really nothing to be had there on most setups.

Some very good reasons above why tuning should be done using Lambda and/or EQR.
The only safe way to know the best AFR and timing is to find these using a load bearing dyno;
and then taking some passes at the dragstrip, adjusting Lambda/EQR to improve ET/TS.
