Torque Management??
I have an 01' Z, and this past week I have had a few instances where the car fell on its face after a shift. Normally I cruise around town in 3rd since I have a ST3500 and manually shift to OD around 45-50 mph. Each time it happened it was when I took off from a stop and manually shifted from D to OD. I just rolled out and gave it anywhere from 75% - 100% throttle once I got going. I shifted to OD at 50 mph and wham...the RPMs got stuck at 4500 - 5000 RPMs depending on how much gas I was giving it at the time, and the car would not pull. I have never had this happen when taking off at full throttle in D or OD, so I am not sure if this is TM kicking in or if I could be hitting the rev limiter. I think it is TM though as the RPMs were steady and not bouncing like when you hit the limiter. Does this sound like the dreaded TM? If so, does anyone have any recommendations on curing it.

Re: Torque Management??
I also have an '01 Z28 with an ST-3500. Why would you take off in D and try to shift it manually into OD at full throttle. If you are going to race the car on the street or at the track just leave it in OD any you'll be fine. The dreaded SES light comes on when in stop and go traffic with the car in OD. Since I have been keeping it in D while driving under 50 MPH I have not gotten the SES light.

Have you a-taped yet? TM shows up as negative timing. I have an ’00, and it’s unusual for pre-‘01s to have TM issues, but I did. I was getting negative timing on WOT upshifts, but I never experienced what you are describing. However, I have a friend with an ’02 that has the same problem as you, and he is also getting negative timing when it happens.
I had my TM removed and now all is well. The difference is seriously night and day. Screw TM <img src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" border="0"> it’s evil. Me----> <img src="graemlins/gr_guns.gif" border="0" alt="[guns]" /> <img src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" border="0" alt="[devil]" /> <----TM

Re: Torque Management??
Sounds like it might be TM, but, as stated, you will have to ATAP. The only way to get rid of it is to send your computer to get it deleated. Try Ed Wright. Also, if you want a long tranny life, stop playing with the gears, leave it in OD all the time. There is no benifit to switching around, it only serves to take it's toll on the already doomed A4. I know, it's fun though, well, wait until you get a better tranny. Good luck.

Re: Torque Management??
When passing people, trying to merge onto the freeway, or just leaving the pack at the light. As soon as I get up to 50 I shift into OD and cruise at about 70. I haven't had a race or been to the track since I put the new verter in since I still have stock tires. I will be getting DRs this weekend and am worried I might start seeing more TM issues once I really start playing around.

Re: Torque Management??
Well since I don't have A-tap or know anyone with it I am having to try and guess here. That is why I am asking for help. As far as playing with the gears, I have to. If I leave it in OD while driving below 45 it will set off the SES light. Like I said I leave it in D below 45 and shift into OD once I get to 45-50 mph. Normally I am not aggresive with the car when doing this. When I am giving it full throtle and shifting, I let out of the throtle shortly after I shift into OD.

Since you're local, talk to Jayson at MTI. He has the capability to delete or minimize the torque management through programming. He did it on my car. Much cripser shifts now.

Re: Torque Management??
Thanks for the recommendation Red.
If I can determine it is TM, I will give him a call so we can talk about getting it removed.

Try posting over in the C5 forum. There should be some Houston area C5 Autotappers that would be willing to help out.

what is the code that you get for this? mine says its a shift solenoid, and doesnt lockup then- till i shut the car off for a couple of seconds, or clear the codes. this has been driving me nuts and i cant find the problem.

Re: Torque Management??
I don't know the code ( think it is like P0370 or something like that), but that is the same problem some of the 01 and up cars are having with the larger yanks. You can avoid it by driving in D below 45mph. I haven't gotten it since I started doing this.

Re: Torque Management??
That problem is IDENTICAL to what happens to my friends '01 WS6. Once the converter/shift kit was installed it started doing it.
Car upshifts, BAM holds at 4500rpms, cars at WOT and it just falls flat on its face.
Torque Management is the case.
Having it deleted should fix it.
RPM WS6 gained a HUGE SOTP gain from this alone!
