Default Hypertech Power Programmer # 3 - Is it worth it?

I have heard good and bad things about them. So is it a good thing or not.

IMO, it's an expensive short-term bandaid, just like MAF ends, the MAFT, O2 simms, CAGS disconnect, etc. All the aforementioned stuff (plus much more) can be done in LS1_Edit for $550 + laptop, and this stuff would probably cost ~$350 total.

My laptop isn't up to spec for LS1_Edit, but I hope to resolve that this year!

Depends what you want to do. Compared to the cost of LS1edit and the cost of a laptop it's much more cost-effective, especially for an A4 car.

Since LS1edit came out, people have been dumping HPP3's for around $200 (that's what I got mine for). The power tuning seems to vary from car to car, but you can change shift points and firmness for A4 cars, bump up the rev limiter, get rid of the top speed limiter, change the fan settings,
adjust the PCM for gear swaps. For a M6 car I don't know if I would get one, but it's nice for A4 cars.

HPP3 is good for auto cars... m6 it is a glorified fan switch....

If you have a laptop already... consider spending the extra 200 bux on ls1 edit.... it's better and can do the same things as an HPP3 (I downloaded my HPP3 programming before selling the unit)

Also the power programming is pitiful.... works on some cars, others it doesn't.... all it does is raise timing a little... flatten the timing curve at peak torque, and it copies the high octane tables to the low octane tables (so if the computer switches to low octane mode due to problems the problems wont be corrected and could potentially break your motor)

I had the HPP3 for my M6 car, it was a waste of money...I guess I got rid of my top speed limiter and my car can now go to 255, I also used the new gear ratio thing...and put the fans on or what ever, but now I got rid of it and have LS1edit tuning, now thats worth it..

I also started out with the HPP3 in my M6 car. I noticed only a minor difference even with the 160 Thermostat. After I received it, I was not happy to learn that the stock program was retained in the unit, and if something malfunctioned, you were out of luck. The comments I have heard from others on the customer service also had me thinking. I think that HP was more useful in the days of the chip change, at least you kept your stock chip and it gave peace of mind.
Having gone first with Autotap and a MAFT and then going to LS1-edit, if I had it to do over again, I would have been wiser to just go the Autotap and LS1-edit route. I have noticed the most gains from tweaking the additions from those programs.
I would recommend to anyone looking to purchase the HPP3, save your money until you can afford Atap and LS1edit. At least that is my humble opinion, others may differ.

So Guys,
For a friends car, would he be better off with AutoTap, LS1 Edit, or EFLive? I take it you don't have to buy both LS1 Edit and AutoTap, only one. He has an A4 car, fairly modded, wants total access to fuel and ignition curves, etc.
Cheers.

I just got a HPP3 for my A4 02' Ram Air. I mostly got it so I can tune the shift points for when I get my converter in (ST3500). I went to the track Saturday and picked up a tenth from just adjusting my shift points with out the converter. The shift firmness is nice but I don't use anymore than 25% because I heard too many horror stories from people who used it. I havent used the power program at the track because the weather has been hot and I was getting some detentation from using it earlier in the week.

If you have a lap top, get LS1 Edit. It would be more bang for the buck.

Autotap and EFI Live let you read what's going on n the PCM (car temp, timing, kr, etc...)

So really in order to tune the car you need autotap (or efi live)

EFI Live offers 2 way communications but it's like a dealership TECH 2.... it can change what goes on in the car temporarily. as soon as you unplug the unit the stock programmming isused

The Bad News... you need both LS1 Edit and either Atap or EfiliveV5.

Ths GOOD NEWS.... they both do so much that you become ecstatic and pat your self on the back and congratulate yourself on that fact that you saved the money by not buying the Hypertech Unit like the rest of us who were not so well informed.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.
