Is it possible to “lock out” a PCM with LS1 Edit?
<strong>i have not seen any locking option on mine.
i really really dont think so... unless the vendor copy is different.</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Over on another board, someone was selling his slot in a group purchased shop version. He claimed it could make changes that the regular version couldn't. When I asked about it, he only said that is what he had heard. Here's what carputing says on their website http://www.carputing.com:
"Please note that there are no editing functionality differences between the unlimited and locked versions of LS1-edit. The difference in these products is that the locked version will limit the number of PCM's you are able to tune."
I would guess that they have the same functionality.

As a point of reference, I know for a fact that he is wrong about the unlimited version being “no holds barred” so to speak. I wanted my original tuner (with unlimited version) to turn off my P0748 code for my tranny. He said that was not a supported DTC in Edit and that he could not turn it off. So it certainly can’t do everything.
I just hope there is no “option” for a locking feature with the unlimited version. We shall soon see. My Edit should be here in 1.5 to 2 weeks.

I have Ed Wright tuning. I hear he "locks" (via a code or ?) the PCM to prevent others from messing w/ his tuning. To me, this means I cannot, for example, overwrite his programming w/ a HPP3 (or other device/software).
OTOH, carputing.com sells a "locked" version of their hardware which means that only so many PCMs can be tuned w/ their hardware. The others are "locked out". I don't understand this to mean that a HPP3 cannot retune (and overwrite) their tuning.
How far off am I?: Can anyone verify they have overwritten Ed's tuning w/ LS1_Edit? (W/out requiring Ed's assistance.)

<strong>I agree. I see no evidence that there is anything different about the unlimited version after reading that portion of the website. Not sure where that guy got his info, but I think he is wrong. At least I hope he is <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I also saved the original (stock) file from your car if you need it.

<strong>That GP is a scam BTW.</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I know the GP is a scam, I got that info straight from Ken a while ago... I was referring to somebody who went in with a shop owner who purchased the unlimited version of LS1 Edit and let people help him with the purchase in exchange for unlimited use of it at his shop. This person was selling his 'share'. It was a good deal (if you live near the shop) since the shop owner would help you tune and it was cheaper than buying it yourself. The downside was that you had to do it on his schedual, because you did not have your own cable.

<strong>JBrisby, what shop is getting the LS1 Edit? I'm assuming when you say you're in NC FL it can't be too far from me. Shoot me an email if you like.</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm not very far, but the shop is... The shop is in Severn, MD. If you click on the link in my original post, a few up from here, you can see the original thread (on another forum) where the ad was posted. It seems like a good deal to me, if I was nearby that is... But I have no realtionship with the seller or the shop.

you can read it and write it, but you just can't open it.
ed didnt do anything to keep you from tuning your car, all he did was make an effort to keep what he does, on th down low.

<strong>Probably you are fine, though I would still always start with a fresh download if anyone else except you has touched/programmed/flashed the pcm (this includes if the dealer flashed some sort of update at a service call)
Chris</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What you said here kinda confused me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
Here is the path my PCM has taken. I had an HPP3 that I was using, but I removed that and returned my PCM to stock with the same HPP3 (meaning I put the stock file back in). Then, I sent my PCM out with the stock file to MTI to be tuned with LS1 Edit. They did the tune and returned it. I then sent it back for a couple of small changes and they returned it. (same stock PCM) That is where I am at now. This car & PCM has never been to a dealer. The PCM has never been touched by anything but HPP3 (returned to stock) and MTIs LS1 Edit.
See, I don’t wanna go back to stock because I don’t want to mess with the timing and a/f curves that MTI installed. All I want to be able to do here is make small changes to stuff like shift points, idle speed, DTCs and the like without sending my PCM back to Texas every time.
So does that mean I’m good? TIA <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

<strong>Yep - that is actually my suggestion (and the safest way). Download the MTI program and make changes from there.

<strong>Just to be clear - you do not want to flash over Ed's program with another LS1 edit program - you should only upload the same base file that is in the pcm. You will need to get the pcm reset to stock first.</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Chris' statement is accurate. You do NOT want to just 'flash over' an unknown or different file with LS1_Edit. The reason is - LS1_Edit only flashes the DATA tables, and not the code. GM is known to move data around, and if the code references a data table that's been written with data that isn't supposed to be there, weird things can happen.
This is why starting with a known quantity (flashed to 100% stock PCM) is essential with LS1_Edit. The LS1 is different than the LT1 PCM in this regards. The LT1 PCM, when reflashed with LT1_Edit, was completely wiped. The LS1 is not.
If you don't know what file Ed started with, you should not try to flash over it. It may work; but then again, it may not.
