Default HPP 3 Tuning on an A4

Anyone have an HPP 3 and Auto? I am trying to get an idea of where to put my shift points and the fan setting and firmness of shifts. I currently have a 98 Formula w/ 3.23 gears and picked up and HPP 3 form someone today. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I dont set mine any more than 75% & on your shift mph you just need to tinker with it to set it where you want it.I have mine on +2,+2,+2 but i also have a 373 so good luck.

Hi LS1Formula98. On my HPP3 Auto setup (all '98 to '02 LS1 autos have the 3.23 rear gears, from the factory) I left the shift points alone and put the shift firmness to 100% . . . obviously, I do not have a shift kit . . . the shifts are not too harsh . . . and I have not heard of one person who has had a problem with this 100% setting. Opinions are fine, but reality is sometimes different.

Unlike some of our buds, with power tuning activated, I have not experienced any pinging or the dreaded valve float. The only question in my mind is what max rpm our stock valve trains are capable of (without causing damage) . . . there are many opinions out there and it almost seems that not all of or LS1s leave the factory with identical specifications.

As for the shift points, as long as the auto is not shifting right before the traps, I don't believe that any change will result in a, statistically significant, improvement.

F-bodies come with 2.73 in the rear unless you opt for the 3.23 or get it as part of a package. It was called the "Rear Performace Axle" option.

I have the HYPT 160 stat so I use the 160 fan setting !

Shift firmness setting is set at 100% !

Shift points are as follows 1-2 +3, 2-3 +2, 3-4 0,

I also have the HPP rev limit set at 6600 rpm !

I consistently run 12.9x with these settings and a few bolt-ons !

Good luck !

I run the HPP3 on my 98 T/A A4 w/3.73's and I run the highest rev limit I can *the 6600rpm* of course your shift points will be different than mine due to the gearing but I'd suggest doing some full throttle passes and experiment with it. I run 1-2 6mph 2-3 4mph and 3-4 0mph and I'm running right on the edge, before I hit the limiter. I have no pinging either, but my advice if pinging pops up redo your pcv setup. They have been known to pass oil back into the intake under acceleration and this leads to burnt oil and carbon in your chambers giving you engine knock - Best of luck -adam

Thanks, Orange Krush & Adam Schlitter! Stock valve trains and 6,600 RPMs? When I posted elsewhere that I put "it" to 6,200 RPMs, I got a lecture about valve float. So help me out . . . 6,000 RPM on the street and 6,600 RPM on the strip? Then the only question would be, how long before the valve train goes? And when it does, will a piston(s) get "notched" by a valve? Please respond . . . I'd really like to get into the 13s . . . OK . . . I'd sell my soul . . . LoL Although many of the Forum members are very helpful, it's nice to hear responses from brave souls who have been there, done that . . . theory is nice, but actually doing "it" is real.

I guess that if I your car pings with power tuning enabled, there are octane boosters.

For setting shift points, it's a "try and see" thing-whatever works best for your car.
As far as my shift points and rev limit settings, I'm at +3 on the 1-2 shift and + 2 on the 2-3 shift, and running 6300 on the rev limiter.
But I'm running "highway gears" and a 3500 stall converter. My settings were necessary to maximize 1st gear and to keep from hitting stock rev limiter because of the 'verter. I'm also running 50% HPP3 settings on shift firmness to take some of the "softness" out of the shift that the 'verter introduced at part throttle.

Hey Bill set that sucker on kill !

My settings are in there 24/7 !

Valve float should never be a problem in that A4 car till U rack up major miles !

Just a little FYI I currently have 27,100 miles on my Z 150 + dyno pulls and 580 + 1320 passes !

Only problem I have encountered is a little tq convertor slippage and that is from a few too many 150 sauce runs !

Oh by the way 13.xx's should happen already !

Bone stock right down to the air in the tires I ran 13.7 @ 103.51 !

Oh by the way I have never had knock with Sunoco 94 Super unleaded on the street !

When I run at the track on just motor I would use Sunoco GT100 Racing unleaded for insurance !

http://www.racegas.com/Racegas/

When I am using the silly sauce I use VP's Motorsport 103 for a little anti-knock insurance if U know what I mean !

Thanks, Orange Krush!

We're at 2,200 ft. in Edmonton. I went to Bud Park for a recon visit last Friday (haven't dragged in 20 years ) . . . there were five LS1s there. Only one made it into the 13s - a pewter Firehawk with a 13.49 . . . I think he was on the bottle It's supposed to be a street legal nite and there were a couple of old funnies with huge slicks. The best F Bod time was a 10.56 from a turquois LT1 camaro.

Although the idea of 6.6K scares the pi$$ out of me, I'll try it . . . you only live once.

Well, Denver, Colorado at over 5,000 feet has us beat (see US altitudes)!

Sounds like you'll have a great time in October!

Hey guys, 6600 is way to high for a stock cam Try shifting at 6100, I'm willing to bet you lower your ET

I have just received a communication from a source that I know is reliable. Most of the hard core crowd have been and are using 6,400 to 6,600 RPMs without problems. Even though that's well beyond the hp peak, quarter mile times are improved.

Our autos cannot be manually shifted . . . one leaves in in 4th (OD) or 3rd. If you have an auto, you will only try shifting manually once . . . you shift, but the computer will shift when it feels like it. Having an auto sure is simpler than a stick (for dragging)

Thanks, Orange Krush! Went to Bud Park on Monday and had 3 13.5s and 3 bad runs . . . You really have to feather the throttle coming off the line!

My best run:
R/T: .706" (got 3 in the .6 range, but . . .)
60': 2.180" (Street tires @ 27.5 psi; fronts at 38 psi)
1/4 mi. ET: 13.531" (13.154" corrected)
MPH: 103.74 mph (106.78 mph corrected)

Hey, are reaction times (R/Ts) corrected also?

Can't remember why I haven't gone to a strip in the last 20 years.

Hope to remember to get some M/T ET Streets for next time.

Well here in Utah we are about 5500 feet and 13's are hard to come bye. The fastest I have ran my car is a 14.4 @ 97. I have a list of mods that i have done on my 99 TA and the 13's are still aluding me....
