You could rig a volt/ohm meter up directly to the battery and moniter the reading. If it stays up at 12-14 volts yet dies then its a ground or a short. If it drops suddenly then its the battery or a short. Maybe borrow a bat and give it a shot. Seems like if you had a short somewhere that you would blow a fuse.
