Default RPM signal

Where does the RPM signal come from? I mean, what sensor does the PCM use to determine RPM? My problem is that my RPM's indicated and logged jump 400-500 RPM 3-5 times a second. I think this causes some pretty screwey things to happen with timing and injector timing. I do have to get the CPK relearn done (waiting for my local dealer to call me back with an appointment). But just curious if this is where the computer determines the RPM from.

Thanks,
Derrick

P.S. I have a 2001 Z06 with a C5R 427.
