Default Headers Glowing Orange!!!

I had to jump my 98 trans am because the battery was dead. It was nighttime and i backed it out of the garage let it idle for about 5 minutes and when i was sitting in the car i started to smell a burning smell. I immediately popped the hood and looked inside the engine compartment and my JBA headers were literally GLOWING orange! anyone have any idea about what this could be??

your car is runnin super lean dude. either that or i've heard that clogged cats can make them glow as well. ditch the cats or fix the air/fuel and it wont do that. unless you just want it to ;D

Did it throw a code yet. If not it will. Either the code for the after cats O2 sensors or the lean code. But first thing you should do is fatten that thing up. Tune it down with MAF a good deal to see if that works.

I would think it would be more running rich because its at idle. Lean mixture are hot in the chamber but dont have enought heat content to heat outside the chamber during idle...Just my opinion

MAF-T will NOT do that. The only way that can happen is if you are coming off WOT and are in PE, or if you are in open loop..

Everyone else is right on though... you are VERY lean, at least at 17:1....

You need to get some kind of diagnostics program so you can figure out what in the world is going on with your car.

This still totally sounds like a seriously clogged up catalytic converter to me.

With no airflow through the engine compartment,
there's nothing to cool the headers. The glow
is just more obvious in the dark. I've seen
this on cars of mine that had headers, without
any special problem being present. Same for my
motorcycle, if it sits and idles high for a
bit the down tubes glow.

Mixture will change exhaust gas temp, but a
gross mixture error isn't necessary to see
some glow, in the dark.

How did the car run after you started it? If your headers were glowing, then I would think it's running lean.
