PCM bench programming cable
Ed, Steve, and the other big-name tuners must have something they use for mailorder PCM's.
You can definitely make your own and it isn't that difficult - the hardest part is probably getting the proper connectors for the pcm (alternatively you could just manually insert the pins each time).

It's a nice cable, but i built my own 6 months ago before i found these guys. Hope this helps.

FYI, the LS1 connector can be purchased as GM part number 12167308 - that contains the metal shell, white inserts, and a pair of the blue, black, red, and clear connectors. To cover both the blue and the red connectors, you have to buy 2 of these kits.
Edit: You may wonder why all the switches. One is for power, one is for ignition, and the two in the middle allow the user to toggle between 97-98 PCMs and 99-02 PCMs (which puts power / ground on different pins).
