Default SES light, knock sensor???

should I be concerned. the tech that diagnosed my car said not to. Apparently its an indepth job to replace the sensor, which he says is going bad. ((aparently the replacement of the know sensor requires the removal of the intake, because its on the back side of the engine.)) He said that if the knock sensor was detecting detonation, it would simply retard the timing, and do its job...not throw a code. His dio is that the sensor is going bad. It goes on and off, however it seems mostly on.

Opinions, comments, and experiance is appreciated.

R&Ring a knock sensor on the LS1 is extremely easy. The intake manifold can be pulled within 20 minutes. Once the intake manifold is off the knock sensors will sit right below it in the valley cover. Using a ratchet and the appropriately sized socket the knock sensor will unscrew out of the block. The entire job should take no more than an hour to complete. There are no fluids or sealants to deal with either.

I would get this resolved as soon as possible as the knock sensors are vital to reducing/eliminating damaging detonation.

Tim is right. Inform the tech that there's a GM TSB out dealing with that very problem. Not only does the sensor need to be replaced, but a silicone dam needs to be created around the rubber boots that are supposed to, but don't, keep the sensors dry. Also, the square foam piece, under the intake, needs to be removed (since it sits on top of the rear sensor, it wicks water, soaking the sensor). As long as this problem goes ignored, you'll always have at least 4 degrees of knock retard.
