Default Increasing shift firmness

I need some opinions on increasing shift firmness via PCM. I already have firm shifts via race build transmission, but I heard that you need to also reprogram the PCM to get the most out of it. Some people only have the PCM firmness done and no shift kit.

So what's the best way to go.

1. Shift kit only
2. PCM only
3. Both.

And please explain your answer.

Both it is worth the performance of a better shift pattern, once i rised my shift points the car function better at the drags, and a little different while driving around in normal mode.

I perfer the different shift pattern now.
Just one thing to remember that both the RPM and the MPH have to be met before the auto will change gear.
Also you found that the car changes at a different speed to that of the calibration of the LS1EDIT be some 4-5MPH i found, this is my opinion that i have found.

That's a good idea. I hate how often it shifts around town. Did you also increase the line pressure via PCM? I'm wondering if I should still increase it via PCM even though I already have the shift kit. I just want maximum durability at this point. I don't want to harm the transmission in anyway.

The thing that makes our trans seem way too
Grandma is the "decision time". This isn't
line pressure, it's the computer being clever.
Programming with the Predator made a huge
difference in the shift feel, firmness,
duration. Got rid of that annoying 2-3
"feathering" when you have to let off for
traffic or speed limit at 50MPH, it makes
up its mind plenty quicker if you tell it
it's OK to.

If you already have the line pressure upped
from a shift kit you might want to check its
current pressures in operation before messing
them around. According to Colonel the software
line pressure only affects part throttle, I
guess the maximum is really set by the pump
and mechanical regulator and the PCM only gets
to say what fraction of head pressure is applied.

I would try to get the decision time down first
before messing with the line pressures, the line
pressure I think only needs help if you have poor
grab at WOT. But this is only a barely clued
opinion.

Dom... I would only go with the PCM based on what you're asking.

LS1Edit has multiple tables for shift patterns and shift firmness.

I've only messed with the shift firmness and the car runs like night and day. Chris Speiss (forum director on the Nitrous forum) has messed with the shift patterns (upshift/downshift not the baseline pressure stuff). Both of us have had very successful results with just changing those tables.

Personally, I don't think you would want the shift kit because you can accomplish just about everything else with the PCM. Unfortunately, I've not had any experience with a shift kit in an LS1 powered car. I have done it in a 78 Z28 and it accomplished the same things that I was able to do with in LS1Edit.

If I was going to do anything to the tranny in my SS it would be to put beefier internals... (There's a guy here in Cincy that is real good with trannys. His name is Dave and here's an address to his site: http://lt1dave.com/)

Dom, you really need both but start with a kit and work on it from there. edit will only do so much and should be used for fine tuning only. the shift kit or whatever you plan to do with your internals will give you the firmer shifts and longer tranny life. the valve body ultimately controls HOW the transmission shifts. edit will help you control WHEN the transmission shifts under specific conditions. happy tuning!
