Default HESCO > Questions concerning this new LS1 Dyno tuner in Alabama

I have seen a few posts here lately mentioning HESCO in Birmingham Al. I understand that they just recieved there LS1 Edit and have an in-house dyno.

I am in need of wide band dyno tuning, but I am a little concerned about HESCOs knowledge using LS1 Edit.

Hesco may have a great reputation with NASCAR, but we all are painfully aware of the long learning curve in using LS1 Edit (no matter how knowledgable someone is as a Ford tuner, a carb tuner, etc)

If anyone has any more knowledge about HESCO as far as there LS1 abilities and experience... please comment.

I have considered driving from Northern Alabama down to Thunder Racing, but it's just too long of a drive. I don't have Autotap, and I don't have very good feelings with mail order PCM tuning. My car is in a real need for code deletions and tuning (running too rich and idle problems)

HESCO would only be a 1 1/2 hour drive, but again......

Thanks,
Ron

I blew up an ARE H/C package (tuned by Ed Wright at his shop) when a CompCams 918 spring failed at 6000rpm. Comp was not willing to stand behind their product (as you know from posts last year) but Wade Stevens at ARE was. He built my 436 at great sacrifice, and went way beyond the call of duty to make things right. However I did not ship the car to him (the trashed engine only) and reinstalled it here at HESCO. Ed Wright sent us a newly programmed computer (to get running with) and my intent was to go to his shop for fine tuning.

Due to work and other things, I never could get to Ed's. I did get to Lou Gigliotti's, who was able to get some tuning done, though he did not have time to optimize the car. Which brings me to HESCO. Lee Hurley (the owner, a good friend, and someone whose spent a whole life building serious engines) purchased LS1 edit (for me initially, and now for his business in general) and took the time to learn it. He also took pains to initiate a dialogue with Ken Kelly, Wade Stevens, and some other experienced tuners, to fill in some blanks in his knowledge base. He then spent quite a bit of time fine-tuning my car (which, as you know, is often a work in progress). Subsequent to this, he has tuned a number of other packages, and is clearly committed to doing this in a serious way.

The upshot of all this is that I think Lee can do first rate work for you. Yes his experience with LS1 edit is not yet very deep. On the other hand, he has tremendous experience tuning all sorts of things, is more than willing to contact others when needed, and will absolutely stand behind his work.

Hope this helps; let me know if I can answer anything else.

Lamar Walden Automotive {770-449-0315} in Doraville, GA. did the tuning on my car after a head flow test and new cam install. It's FINALLY where it should be. The tuning is very complete and his LS1edit guy knows his stuff.

Ask for Rob feel free to mention my name if you wish. I've sent quite a few locals his way.

At the very least it's worth a phone call.

i will never take my car back to hesco again
they were all a$$holes to me after i put my cam in
they treated me like a little kid who didnt know what i was doin
they have a freddy flinstone dyno that is old and a piece of crap
sorry to rant and rave but everyone around here hates them
they are sooooo expensive too
their logo is "speed cost money, how fast do u want to go" it is 75 per pull on the dyno
with just a cam and bolt ons their dyno said i put down 365 rwhp abnd 355 rwtq which had to be wrong cuz i redynoed at a brand new dyno and brand new shop in trussville on a dynojet and i only put down 370 rwhp and 372 rwtq after the headers but anyways just to give you a heads up they will charge a arm leg and ********

Oh Boy!

I really appreciate the info... With that said, I am now in a real tangle with the two opposite points of view Wish it was not like this. Oh Well.....

I would not be in this situation had AMS in Dallas been able to tune my car. I got 2 dyno pulls prior to tuning. Unfortunatly, Chris Marsh at AMS was unable to access my PCM do to a lack of required files in his LS1 Edit for the 98 cars.

Lamar Walton (never heard of him) may be an option. I guess he is just outside of Atlanta?

HESCO may still be an option. I believe I will call them anyway. Just hate to hear the negatives. I don't want to join the list of folks that have had problems with them.

Sure wish MTI or Thunder were closer. That would make this problem of mine a non-issue. "Mail Order" tuning may work, but I have reservations.

Feel free to e-mail me if anyone can help. Maybe we can get to gather to talk a bit.

Thanks,
Ron
