Octane rating and timing questions...

Octane rating and timing questions... So 9 out of 10 times I fill up with 92-93 octane... car runs great. Whenever I fill up with 89 octane, my car pings <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> This happens until I refill with the higher octane gas again... am I limited to only running 92 gas?
My question comes up because this weekend I hope to install my Ramchargers Timing Tuner. If I am getting pinging from using anything less then 92 octane, I'm betting I won't be able to add much timing even when I run 92, huh?
