What exactly is TM?
It is the PCM's way of retarding timing in order to soften the blow on the tranmission when it re-engages therefore adding longevity and also smoothing out the shift.
If performance is more your goal though, it can be turned down with either an aftermarket programmer or with LS1Edit/Predator/HPPIII if you wish.
And what do you mean by turning it down? In LS1 Edit, don't you just up the value of the TM? Like stock it's 350, wouldn't you go up?
There are two tables that you need to turn down. One is the retard amount and the other is time delay. Turn them down both to "0" and you're set.
I'm sure those with autos can tell you exactly what they did in greater detail, but that's it in a nutshell.

What is does not have is the Abuse mode that A4 trannie has. Look at the tables and you see torque values for all 6 gears (MN6)
Corvette also uses T.M for active handling/traction control but TM has more of an overall effect with an A4 as well as misfire does, they both control what mode the torque converter is in where on a MN6 just timing is yanked when TM kicks on.
