Default Tech II Device Needed for Camshaft Position Sensor Relearn??

I need to know exactly how do I do a Crankshaft Position Sensor relearn. Also from what I have found from the search I need a Tech II device. What qualifies as a Tech II device? I have access to autotap and LS1edit? Are either of these tech II. I also have access to a Red Diagnostics scanner type thing that my local buddy has at their garage.. I need to know exactly what I need to do....

Thanks

EFILive with it's bi-directional control option (extra cost) can put the PCM into a mode where it can learn the crank tooth error correction. I believe that is what you are asking. I don't think Atap can do that.

Tech II is the factory gm scan tool made by vertronix.It was the only tool I know of that can do the crankshaft relearn. Never heard of the efi live or anything else working but worth checking out. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

At the bottom of page under "one shot controls" it mentions "Tooth error learn mode" is that the same thing as the crankshaft relearn?

How long does it usually take to get this performed at the dealer? Is it absolutely necessary after installing a new Crank Sensor?

As Wrencher said, I'd personally only do it with a Tech2. I don't care if others out there *may* be able to do the same. Problem is, even used ones are still around $2k on E-Bay. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> I'm working on a refurbished one myself. Just go to the dealer and tell them you want a "CKP System Variation Learn Procedure". If you are replacing the PCM with a new one, there are also two or three other steps that must be done beside the CKP learn.

Anyway, here is the process.

important
While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine will respond to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.

1) Install scan tool
2) Apply the vehicle's parking brake
3) Block the drive wheels
4) Close hood
5) Place transmission in park (auto) or neutral (M6)
6) Idle the engine until coolant temp reaches 65 degrees C (150 degree's F)
7) Turn OFF all accessories
8) Apply the brakes for the duration of the procedure
9) Enable the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure with the scan tool.
10) Slowly raise the RPM's to 4,000rpm
11) Immediately release the throttle when the engine speed decreases
12) Turn OFF the ignition for 15 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully

EFILive Pro V5 does it too (it's just a command code it sends to the PCM, same command code that the Tech II sends);

EFILive Pro V5 costs something like $350 including the cable (software updates are free, and software support is excellent...);

Whatever bi-dir scan tool you use, you should carefully read and follow the procedure in the Service Manual (which CMNTMXR57 faithfully reproduced); if you screw it up, just do it over.
