Default 160* stat-under 210* temps?

When I bought my car, the guy told me that he bought a hpp3, he gave it to me w/ the car and in the box I found the reciept for a 160* stat also, my car has never been over 210*, stays just under it. I was just wondering if this was about-I heard of bad things when using a hpp3 w/o lower stat

Thanks for help!

The temp gauge in our cars is really nothing more than an idiot light. Even with a thermostat change your gauge will still read a tad under 210. I have HPP 3 and used it to make fan adjustments, rev limiter and gear ratio changes. I had to remove the Power Program because I ran into some pinging problems above 4,500 rpms.

I bought the SLP "160" thermostat and installed it. I noticed my temp gauge was slightly lower than before, but not much. I scanned with Tech 2 to monitor coolant temp. only to find out that it actually operates between 170-180 degrees. You don't always get what you pay for. This would explain why when I contacted SLP before I even bought the thing to ask why their T-stat wouldn't set off a code for coolant temp. too low, they said they'd never heard of it happening before. I know for a fact that if it operated at 160 degrees, it would set a code under stock PCM tuning. My owner's manual for my 01 TA specifies the stock t-stat as a 180 degree and it actually operates right around there. Wow, the SLP unit is a whole 5-10 degrees cooler! Another wasted fifty bucks along with a crappy fitting SLP "smooth bellows" for another fifty.

SLP seems to peddle quite a few "snake oil" performance products, that don't do a damned thing but lighten a man's wallet. I bought the "Air Temperature Module", and that was a joke. I also noticed that their service is a little slow.

If you want your 160-degree thermostat to do
its job, then your low speed fans had better
be on by 150F. Stock fan settings are up over
200F. So your 'stat's an open hole to hot-as-
ever, unless you change that.

Depending on your answer, the hypertech will or will not advance the timing in your engine. Because you're making the engine do more work and get hotter when you advance timing, the 160 t-stat is needed to keep the engine cooler. I have the hypertech programming in my '01 Sierra, but have not chosen the advanced timing option yet b/c I haven't installed the 160. I've talked on GM pick up forums and the guys who have run their trucks with the 160+advance timing say their trucks run around 170-180. You get a noticeable amount of power, but you mileage will go to $hit. All my fellow Californians: forewarned is forarmed (especially with these ridiculous gas prices).
